Today we’d like to introduce you to Jacob Kazakos.
Jacob, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I’ve been drawing ever since I could pick up a crayon. I played sports growing up, all the way through high school but art was always a constant. When I got to junior college, I took an Illustration class and instantly knew this is what I wanted to do with my life. I transferred to CSULB and graduated with a BFA in Illustration in 2016. After graduation, I began working fulltime as a freelance illustrator, and that is where I currently stand today.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It has definitely not been a smooth road, and I would say I’m still searching for that smooth road. It has been hard finding consistent work. You take what you can get and hope to find something bigger and better along the way. I would say the biggest struggle is staying positive with yourself. There are times when I’ve gone weeks with no work, and I question my talent and career choices. You can put yourself in a deep mental pit thinking that way. I think those thoughts are normal, but I just have to stay positive, focused and hungry. PMA.
We’d love to hear more about what you do.
As an illustrator, I create art for people/companies who need it. It makes me proud when people seek me out for work and say they like the humor in my work. I think there is a dark, gross, strange and humorous element to my work and that is what sets me apart from others.
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
My parents, family, friends, teammates, coworkers, and teachers have all played a major roll in my life. Every interaction I’ve had with them, no matter how small, has played a part in molding who I am today.
