Today we’d like to introduce you to Jaclyn Silverman.
Jaclyn, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I was working full time as a graphic designer for my dad’s wholesale company- C&D Visionary- which manufactures products such as stickers, patches, buttons, etc. I had been seeing great success with all the products I designed and figured I should be selling them independently to get started on fulfilling my dream of being an artist/entrepreneur! I currently still work at C&D full time with JSX Designs as my side hustle, but I’m working towards my goal of flipping that in the near future.
Has it been a smooth road?
The biggest struggle for me has been staying mentally focused and not getting deterred by a lack of immediate success. It’s easy to look at other artists that are doing their thing full time and thriving and then feel down about not being there yet. But I always try to remind myself that these artists didn’t find success overnight either, and as long as I stay positive and keep creating, I will find what I am seeking.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
JSX Designs is a company that creates art and products/merchandise specializing in fun graphics and social justice (especially for the LGBTQIA+ community). Although my style- like all artists- is constantly evolving, the intentions behind what I create will always be positivity and empathy. I want my art and merchandise to be something people can look upon to feel good and be heard; something people can use to express themselves and their beliefs. These intentions are what I’m most proud of as a company and what I feel sets me apart. I am a proud bisexual Jewish woman and I harmonize with my identity, my struggles, and the struggles of my ancestors to maintain a humble and empathetic nature (with a touch of humor, of course).
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
I definitely think the greater Los Angeles area is an awesome place for businesses like mine! It may seem like an intimidating place to be since it’s a huge hub for creatives (meaning a lot of competition), but in reality the opportunity is limitless (and your fellow artists typically don’t want to compete, we are here to help and support you)! Aside from Rona season putting everything on hold there are always small events going on which businesses like mine can join to make sales and network, as well as organically gain a following. The more often I go outside my comfort zone to do events, the more connections I make in the art world. Plus, I’ve made friends along the way too! Every time gets easier, the hardest step is the first one.
