Today we’d like to introduce you to Jackson Wargo.
Jackson, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
It’s difficult to pinpoint the exact moment when Snowball ii became a tangible entity. If you ask the US Patent & Trademark Office, they’d tell you it happened months after we put out our third record—even though I submitted the trademark months before we put out our first. I had been putting out records under other names with some of the dudes who play in the band now for a few years—though at different times—and I had intended to release our first record, ‘?’ under one of those other names before rebranding the entire project as more of a band’s band. I had made the first couple records alone in my studio for the most part, but I wanted this to be something a little bigger than just myself.
We have the typical story of finding guitarists by putting flyers up in local record shops, and having people quit the band right before shows, and having an extended line up a mile long. What we’ve settled on is a little funny because we all went to college together, and could have started this band seven or eight years ago—but alas, as Joyce says, longest way around is the shortest way home.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I’d say it’s hard to really tell how smooth the road really is when you’re riding on it this slowly. And while I’m rather impatient, I don’t mean to say that is a bad thing.
Throughout the formation of the band and the team we’ve built and strengthened, it seems that I’m constantly being reminded that all we need is directly in front of us. Trying to find new players just led me right back to the people I’ve known for years. I tried really hard to find a manager and a booking agent, which we got for a while, but I ended up having more success pushing the project myself once we all parted ways. So, it seems the biggest struggle is having to remind myself that we have the tools we need right in our own bag, and it’s up to us to utilize them in creative and strategic ways that will propel us faster and lengthen our trajectory.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Snowball ii story. Tell us more about the business.
Snowball ii is a group of eager 90s shoegaze/indie rock revivalists. Maybe “revivalists” is less the right word than “recreationists.” There are a lot of great new bands that are continuing the shoegaze/dream pop/noise rock tradition in totally cool new ways, but our angle is a bit more geared towards returning to what roots we were given with bands like My Bloody Valentine, Spacemen 3, Lilys, et cetera, and exploring alternate paths to see if we can’t find an even truer way these styles could have evolved. So, I think with Snowball ii, you find a lot more of the abrasiveness, texture, as well as true pop songwriting that you find in these older bands than is available with most newer artists in our niche.
It’s rare that we are equated to another band who isn’t at least 25 years old, which is what we’ve been after as a fresh new band. Now that we’ve planted ourselves in the past that we love so much, we can grow from there and move into new areas that I doubt you’ll find from many other bands around. Perhaps I’m wrong or perhaps we’ll fail, but this is what we’re after and I think the whole Snowball ii team has a good feeling about what future we will have.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
We’re all very lucky to have been born into families who are serious supporters of our artistic ambitions, and we’ve met some good folks who have done what they can to help provide us with opportunities, but I’d say we’re still holding out for some juicy piece of luck. I’ll let you know.
