Meet Jackie Rodman of Jackie Rodman Photography in Hollywood

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jackie Rodman.

Jackie, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I moved out to Los Angeles in 1999 after graduating from film school. I made my living in the TV/Film Industry as a Sound Editor for 14 years, working on network dramas like ‘House’ and ‘Law & Order’. When I got married in 2013, I decided to step away from my studio job in order to focus on family, health and my love of photography. Photography has been a lifelong passion for me. Taking my photography to the next level and starting my own business has been a dream come true.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Like anything worthwhile in life, developing my business has been a lot of hard work. The learning curve was steep on the business side of things. I have always been a more artistic, creative-type person, so learning about LLCs and business taxes wasn’t easy. Marketing can also be a challenge for me. I am a humble person, so I have trouble tooting my own horn! I have had to learn to trust in my abilities and let my talents shine through.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
Jackie Rodman Photography is a freelance photography business serving the greater Los Angeles area. I specialize in event, portrait and pet photography.

One of the things that sets me apart is my film background. I received a Masters of Fine Art in Film Production from Florida State University. Pairing this education with working in the TV/Film Industry for so long, I see photography from a cinematic perspective. I try to tell a story with my photographs, the story of say, a wedding or a birthday party. I take in the scene…the setting, the decorations, the attendees, the emotions of the event. I try to capture them in a way that will remind my clients of the entire experience, not just the separate details. I love being able to memorialize events in a way that helps them relive the precious moments of their lives.

I am proud of my ability to adapt to my client’s needs as well as their personalities. I have been told that I make my portrait subjects feel comfortable, which I’ve learned is crucial to taking a great portrait. I want to help people show their best selves.

What were you like growing up?
As are most people, I am a bit eclectic in my interests. I am the youngest of three children and the only daughter. I was definitely a bit of a tomboy growing up. I played baseball in a boys Little League. My family traveled most summers. I have visited most of the national parks in the country, which developed my love of nature as well as photography. When I was in high school I became even more interested in the arts. I became an avid film watcher, which led to my first career.
