Meet Jackie Kim of Maelove in Downtown LA

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jackie Kim.

Jackie, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I’ve been a skincare fanatic from a very young age. I grew up watching my mother do her daily skincare routine, and making it a special time for herself. I remember watching her and wanting to emulate what she was doing. This began my fascination with skincare.

My fascination turned into an obsession and I had to try all the products – from drugstore brands to the 10-step K-beauty routine to very expensive and rare creams. I became dissatisfied with the skincare product choices that were available to me and was searching for something more.

What I saw was a gap in the skincare market – budget brands were price tag friendly, but I felt like that they lacked the quality ingredients, texture and feel of expensive brands. On the contrary, expensive brands felt nice to the touch, but I hated the price tag. I didn’t see a great balance of quality and value anywhere. So, I decided to create my own line.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
One of the major struggles early on in the business was figuring out how to create the type of brand that I envisioned. I’m a skincare industry outsider and had to learn everything from the ground up, so this wasn’t an easy journey. One aspect of the business that was crucial in creating my ideal skincare brand was to partner with the best cosmetic labs. I wasn’t willing to compromise on the quality of my products, so if this wasn’t going to happen, Maelove wasn’t going to happen.

The best labs are always in demand, so convincing these labs to partner with a “petite” startup like mine was a daunting task. It took months and months of persistence, not taking “no” for an answer, and having others tell me to settle for less, to finally have a few labs that were willing to partner with Maelove. There have been many tears shed throughout this journey, but it has all been well worth it.

Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
My mother, Miya, deserves all the credit. She is the woman who inspired me and made me fall in love with skincare. She is the one who has shown me the importance of taking care of my skin. My mother is also our product tester, as she tests all the products alongside with me and my team. My entire family has also been so supportive throughout my journey, especially my brother, Jonathan. Without his love, support, and guidance, I would not be where I am today.

My group of childhood girlfriends has also been my cheerleaders and my hype women – I can always count on them to lift my spirits and to remind me to continue what I’m doing and to not let anything get in the way.

My Co-Founder, Brad, is one of the reasons for the success of Maelove. We complement each other very well as we bring different skill sets to the business, and he’s been a calming force throughout this entire process. He is so talented, and someone that truly is an asset to our brand. Most importantly, we share the same vision for Maelove. We started our brand to create amazing and affordable skin care for all women.
