Meet J. Logan Austin of Crazy Ant Media

Today we’d like to introduce you to J. Logan Austin.

Hi Logan, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I got started in film, television, and podcasting about 7 years ago and ever since then, I can confidently say that I found myself. Stepping into the director/producing role has been a surreal experience for me. It’s allowed me to challenge myself & get challenged by the entertainment industry that I love.

My company, Crazy Ant Media was formed in Biloxi, MS then took our talents to Los Angeles, and then filmed our latest project in Charlotte, NC. Myself and my business partner Dustin love traveling and experiencing different locations across the country to shoot a film. Our goal is to shoot our next project in New Orleans, LA.

I must say that recently I have been on my mental health journey and am trying to figure out why I am the way I am. I have enrolled myself in therapy and have been able to make very decent progress with that. What I am trying to say is that I realized that I can’t create good content if I’m not okay with myself. I have learned to use tools to help keep me in check.

One of those tools is to look at the things in my life that bring me joy and I must say writing scripts and doing the podcast brings me so much joy every week. It gives me the chance to let all of my feelings out and that’s what I need.

Mental health struggles run in my family so it’s very important to me to dedicate time and effort to things that make me happy.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
Like all things, there are speed bumps. I’m thankful for them though because they’re learning experiences. Most recently while producing our film I realized how important it is to be getting things prepared for the next phase of production.

Always be thinking about what comes next while you are doing things now. I also learned during this process that it’s very important not to rush things because when you rush then things can be more stressful than they need to be.

We’ve been impressed with Crazy Ant Media, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
The Crazy Ant Media Company is comprised of a group of creators whose goals and motivation are not driven by fame and fortune, but by entertaining, informing, and making people think, and by doing so with compelling storytelling and imagery.

We aim to produce relevant, cutting-edge entertainment through a BOLD, UNORTHODOX, OUTSIDE OF THE BOX approach. Every week we produce film, television, and podcast productions.

Networking and finding a mentor can have a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
Finding a mentor can be hard. I think this is a very important step in your career and life but just like everything else, you can’t rush it. You have to find someone who you are comfortable with and care about their thoughts and opinions even if they’re not your own.

Constructive criticism is a very important thing to have in this business. It’s sometimes a hard conversation that needs to be had to get to the best possible product. I found this in my business partner, Dustin Bergmann. He and I can get into passionate conversations about our projects but I have learned not to take those personally because it’s not personal and we’re both coming from a good place.

At the end of the day, we would just like for our projects to be entertaining and enjoyable to watch. We share a lot of the same opinions but on the ones we don’t share we can have a conversation and see each other’s perspectives and see how we can incorporate both things. It’s very healthy to voice these opinions and not be a, “Yes person.”
