Today we’d like to introduce you to Ivy Carnegie.
Ivy, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
My husband and I have been together since high school. I was diagnosed with Crohn’s disease at 16 when we were first dating. My journey to find health and wellness was never-ending or so it seemed. I discovered juicing in 2010 and fell in love, as did my husband, which how it made me feel. My husband found a small juice bar for lease in 2012 inside of the gym he attended. We leaped, with no idea of business or how it worked and made the plunge into business. We built another store in the middle of orange county in 2014 in Tustin, CA. It was such a wonderful journey and something I am so thankful to fear never got in the way of. We just went and it was crazy and chaotic and thank goodness I did not KNOW how hard running a business was or I would never have done it.
Has it been a smooth road?
No, not in the slightest. Within six months of opening our first store, my brother unexpectedly passed away. There was no boss to ” call in sick to” to take a personal day. There was no way to call in a co-worker to cover for you or a rule book on how to handle things. Rent had to be paid and my poor husband was trying to hold me up while also making sure our new business wasn’t falling apart. It was such a trying time. Not only that, but we were exhausted and realized there is no such thing as a 40 hour work week when you own a business. It was such a beautiful time for our marriage, however. It was just crazy chaos but we stuck out the ugly and pressed on. I am so thankful for those growing pains.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Drinkbar Juicery – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
We originally started with smoothies and single serving juices. We then realized that would not pay the rent and added in a juice cleanse package. This is where it all changed. We started to focus only on the juice cleanses and got rid of the smoothies altogether. Here we are, almost 6 years later and all we do now is juice cleanse packages and detox meal services. Who would have thought? I am most proud of staying small and handcrafted. What I loved about our business was the pure joy it gave me actually cutting each cucumber, and apple and pouring the love into each order behind the scenes. No one could see me, it was not glamorous but I swear I would grin ear to ear while prepping orders for hours. It was like my soul just screamed with joy. Growing to an enormous company or beyond the mean of me receiving that joy would have taken that away. It was never about the money for us, it was about that joy it gave me. I’ll create another business in the future that will be about the “bottom line”, not this one, not my baby.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
The incredible ability to connect with everyone and anyone at any time. It is amazing. One of my best friends to date is from Michigan and we connected randomly while she was visiting, became goods friends and now she is here full time to flourish. It is a big little city. It seems huge, but really, its actually small, and so many people are connected they have no idea. Our city is filled with dreamers, and although that can be troublesome at times it is the most incredible place to have your dream flames fanned. People are literally on fire, and its such good energy to be around those who are hungry for their goals. Where else in the US is like that?
