Meet Ivette and Andrew Montejo of Amor Por Vida in Arcadia

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ivette and Andrew Montejo.

Ivette and Andrew, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
As we were preparing for our wedding in 2013, we wanted to showcase our Mexican heritage and culture, but couldn’t find the right artist to bring our vision to life. So instead of giving up on our idea to have traditional Papel Picado, we decided to learn and create it ourselves.

Amor Por Vida came to be as a way to unapologetically express our Mexican culture through art pieces. Amor Por Vida is where culture, art and amor intersect.

Amor Por Vida expresses what it is to be Chicano in California. We create papel picado pieces from iconic Latinx figures like Selena to mainstream musicians like Joy Division. Amor Por Vida expresses our multiple identities.

Our goal is to ensure that our community sees themselves in the world landscape through art.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
One of the main challenges we faced was being able to juggle being full time employed, parenthood, while still creating and having momentum to continue growing the business.

Please tell us more about your art.
Amor Por Vida specializes in creating papel picado art pieces that reflect what it is to be multicultural in one of the most diverse cities in the country.

We are known for bringing icons of the past and present whom would not be shown traditionally in papel picado, for example, Amy Winehouse or Prince.

What were you like growing up?
We were kids of the 80’s and 90’s & pop culture had a big influence in our life. From Nintendo, Tamagachi to Mexican Soap Operas, we watched it all.

Creativity ruled in both our homes as kids, whether it was through painting, music or dance. Creating was always part of our identity.

Music was and continues a great source of inspiration, which is probably why many of our papel picado pieces showcase musicians.
