Today we’d like to introduce you to Iva Pawling.
Iva, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
We started Richer Poorer in 2010 with little more than an idea and a lot of determination. We saw there was an opportunity in the sock category at the time, to create a great brand and high-quality product at an attainable price point. We loved that it was a rather ignored category at the time and saw a lot of opportunity in teaching men that this was an easy part of their wardrobe they could change. Fast forward seven years and we’ve taken that same approach to most basics categories for both men and women. We make incredible tees, sweats, underwear, bralettes and socks that become our customer’s favorite items at the top of their drawer.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
At seven years in, I can say that the road has been full of more ups and downs than I thought possible. We’ve experienced all of it. From the highs of landing the biggest accounts, triple-digit growth, and being acquired by an e-commerce giant, to almost not being able to make payroll in the early years, having some of our favorite employees leave, and watching said e-commerce giant file for bankruptcy. If there is one thing guaranteed with growing a business, it’s that you have to be prepared for the unexpected to be thrown at you on a daily basis. How you manage it and how quickly you can problem solve, I believe, is what determines if a company will be successful or not.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Richer Poorer – what should we know?
Richer Poorer is a lifestyle apparel brand. We create timeless basics rooted in quality and inspired by the casual California lifestyle at an attainable price point. We pride ourselves on creating the products that become your favorites that live at the top of your drawer because they are in heavy rotation. The items you can’t wait to wear, every day of the week.
We’re most proud of how our products become staples in people’s wardrobes. The items they feel good and most like themselves in. Their armor to go face the day and tackle whatever is on their plate.
What makes us different than others in our space is our style sensibility, coupled with quality. We work really hard to only create products we personally love the best materials that we stand behind season after season. We don’t do quick trends and our customers know they are buying well-made products that won’t break the bank.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
We are really committed to only developing products that we ourselves are excited to put on every day. Using this as a gauge for our customers has allowed us to really build a trust with them. They know they are only going to get the best from us and that we torture ourselves with fitting after fitting to really get it right. We aren’t looking to have the largest assortment of basics, only the best and most wearable for our customers.
