Meet I’sha Dunston of Izayla in Downtown Los Angeles

Today we’d like to introduce you to I’sha Dunston.

I’sha, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I started my brand, IZAYLA, when I was in undergrad at FIDM (Fashion Institute Design of Merchandising). It was first a business plan for about two years but in 2017, I made my first two designs which cost under $1,000. Since graduating from FIDM, I’ve utilized and taken advantage of many opportunities. For example, a classmate directed me to a manufacturer whom I still use faithfully to this day and I’ve even built relationships with professors who are currently my pattern makers.

I am in the position I am in today solely because of my persistence and planning. Luckily, at a young age, I knew what I wanted to do, and I was determined to make my dream into a reality.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
The road to building a luxury clothing brand from scratch is pretty stressful, especially as a one woman show that is a Jill of all trades for the business. However, I have no complaints, I love what I do, and I wouldn’t change it. But there are moments that I wish I had a supportive and reliable team that I could delegate tasks too. I know things take time and I believe the right people will come at the right time.

There have been many struggles building IZAYLA. But, the biggest struggle and challenge, truly, has been me. I allow many things I have control over to disrupt my peace and I let it control me. During this journey of being an entrepreneur, I am understanding that you must be confident with who you are, content with where you want to take your brand and let no one steer you off that path.

Alright – so let’s talk business. What else should we know about you and your career so far?
I have created a luxury versatile prêt-à-porter luxury women’s wear brand made in Los Angeles catering women all over the world. IZAYLA is a representation of my personality and style. IZAYLA was created for women, who can be both sophisticated and conservative, whenever necessary. The brand encourages women to be one thing: unique.

I specialize in clothing for women but hope to make this brand a lifestyle and incorporate menswear. I would say that I am known for making comfortable clothing that is edgy but classy and sophisticated at the same time. With my company, I am proud that it is made domestically in Los Angeles and I take pride in that.

One of the things that sets me apart from others is my ability to use my introvertedness to be analytical and unconventional. I’m not your typical designer, I’m resilient and tenacious, but emotionally complex; just like my brand.

What has been the proudest moment of your career so far?
The proudest moment of my career would have to be debuting my brand IZAYLA to the world, showing my SS 19’ Collection at LAFW in October 2018 and seeing my father cry. I was very proud of myself!
