Meet Isabel Davila of Edukare Preschool Daycare in San Gabriel Valley

Today we’d like to introduce you to Isabel Davila.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I realized at a very young age I was born to teach and inspire. I loved playing school with my friends and always imagined myself in front of a classroom teaching. But I never imagined getting there would take so many sacrifices and so much courage.

I was 9 yrs. old when became a play leader in my elementary school and helped care for younger kids by supervising them during recess time. Then in high school I began taking child development classes at the ELA Occupational Center where at the end of my course I was awarded a certificate for my dedication and for all the effort I put into the class. That experience was a very strong motivation in my life and it made my desire to teach even stronger. During that time, I also began volunteering at a child development center where after a year of volunteer work I was hired as a teacher assistant (18 yrs old.) At the time, I also began college courses and was on the path that was taking me where I wanted to go in my life.

However not too long after becoming a teacher assistant, something went wrong. I began to hear from family, friends and some teachers all the negative sides about becoming a teacher and why I should not go into teaching. During that same time teachers were getting laid off and somewhere on strikes and others had received teaching credentials but couldn’t get a job.

I was very disappointed and felt confused about whether I should become a teacher or not. Then unfortunately the bad experiences of others scared me enough to leave what I loved to do most.

I decided to forget about teaching and take a different route in my life and so for a few years I worked many jobs for many different companies some with good pay and good benefits but none related to teaching or childcare. Somewhere really great companies with wonderful opportunities but they just could not fulfill my desire to work with children. Until one day I realized how unhappy I was in my job only because I had let fear and the fears of others decide my future for me without even giving me the opportunity of trying for myself. At that moment, I decided to quit my job and go back to school and continue where I left off. But this time nothing and no one would tell me how far I could go or stop me from reaching my goal.

It took a lot of work and determination to get to where I am today but just having the courage and motivation within to keep going made it all possible and all well worth. I decided not only to become a teacher but to own and run my own business in child care to create more opportunities for myself and my family.

I am now the proud founder, owner, caregiver and teacher of Edukare a wonderful preschool and daycare that has made a difference in many children’s lives since 2008.

Has it been a smooth road?
No it has not the road has had a few bumps and challenges along the way as with any business. But the biggest challenge was getting back to the path that led to my success.

Being a dedicated teacher and business owner requires many sacrifices and a lot of work but eventually they are all compensated and well worth when you see the outcome of your hard work. Following your dreams and doing what truly makes you happy is what life is about and we all have the opportunity in Los Angeles to make it possible.

This is a family owned business and although it was founded by me Edukare would not be the successful business it is today without the love and support of my cousin Rick, my husband Mr. Javi, our son’s Troy and Dru and the wonderful past and current parents at Edukare that have trusted us for so many years with their wonderful children.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Edukare Preschool-Daycare story. Tell us more about the business.
We are a state licensed daycare that promotes and encourages learning by allowing children to explore, play, laugh, sing, dance, paint and enjoy being a child. We strongly believe in teaching children with patience, love and respect through fun learning experiences.

We are a pre-school and daycare that cares for young children and offers a strong foundation to prepare the children for school. We work with children ages 1yr and older.

We are different than other daycares in our area because we focus on children learning individually at their own level and at their own pace. We also have mixed groups in our classroom so our younger children learn a lot from the other children and the older children learn to be leaders and compassionate with the younger children. We make sure each child in our daycare leaves well prepared for elementary school with strong cognitive, fine, social and gross motor skills. We also teach Spanish! We are very proud of all the success stories our past parents shared with us of how smart, independent and great students their children have become by attending our school. We educate with care something we believe all schools should do. The love we put into our work makes us a very successful day care!

How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
In the future we see Edukare expanding to several locations allowing us to provide great care and prepare more children for the future than we already today. Also by sharing our ideas and teaching methods we can also encourage other teachers and future business owners to do the same. We are always looking for new methods of teaching and educating and because our world is changing daily we also welcome new ideas and any positive changes into our business at any time.
