Today we’d like to introduce you to Irvin Rivera.
Irvin, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Years ago, as I was starting my career in photography, freelancing as much as I can and sending my works to various outlets and publications, an idea occurred to me. What if I create an outlet, my own publication so I can have more creative freedom, more control of the publication time, and also provide a platform to my creative friends and colleagues? That’s when A BOOK OF was conceived.
The challenge was figuring out a way to create a publication whose purpose transcends beyond the physical or digital form of the magazine. Back then, I thought, how can I make the audience an active participant of the stories we provide? How can the audience participation be converted into something more meaningful? That’s when I decided to include the charity element to it. Each issue supports a specific charity or cause. We donate a portion of the proceeds from each issue to whatever charity/cause that specific issue supports.
A BOOK OF’s title exists to place whatever story we are telling to the forefront. In our publication, Story rules. Whatever the method and the medium, our mission is to share the best stories to our audience. A BOOK OF is a publication that contains libraries of infinite pages of groundbreaking stories for the sophisticated reader who loves art, culture, photography, fashion, travel and lifestyle.
We are storytellers. We put your narrative in the forefront of what we do. Your brand, your stories, your journey and your talent are what we always aim to highlight through the artistic eyes of our team and collaborators utilizing all available forms of evolving media.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
There are definitely challenges in building the brand. Establishing a solid brand, figuring out our tone, analyzing the audience, and aligning our contents to our mission-vision was challenging in the beginning. Gaining trust in the industry, as well as creating strong, solid contents will always be challenging but nonetheless rewarding.
In the beginning, it may feel like you are an unheard voice calling out in the wild, but soon enough, the echoes of your voice will be picked up. When that happens, people will start to pay attention, and that’s when you have to be more on-point with what you say and be more clear of your message. A BOOK OF can be a book of anything, really. It is open to any possibility and topic as it champions various stories.
Please tell us more about your work. What do you guys do? What do you specialize in? What sets you apart from competition?
A BOOK OF is an independent Arts & Culture publication that champions stories. Our goal is to put various interesting stories in the forefront. Whether it’s from TV, film, music, entertainment, fashion, beauty and anything else, we want to make sure that we present the stories, and the contents we create in the most beautiful way as we can.
We publish online as well as in print. We do Special Collector’s print books featuring one talent/group/topic as well as a bi-annual thematic book. Each book released supports a specific charity/cause that was either chosen by the artist featured or related to the theme of the book. Portions of each proceeds are donated to the specific charities/causes.
A BOOK OF is most proud of our editorial approach and visually-rich storytelling. Whether we’re telling stories through words, photos or videos, we make sure that we provide the most relevant, high-quality content to our audience. If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
If I had to start over, I think I will still do the same thing. The journey has been really good and rewarding so far.
