Meet Irina Liakh of Surfing Sound Waves in Venice

Today we’d like to introduce you to Irina Liakh.

Irina, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I’ve been writing for as long as I can remember. Both writing and music have always been my passion. I went to university majoring in journalism and PR and then started working in the music industry. Three years after I moved to LA from Ukraine to follow my dreams, I wasn’t in a good place in life and felt quite lost, so I wanted to come up with the creative outlet for myself. I launched an art blog and started interviewing artists (musicians, actors, photographers, and others).

After some time it started picking up on social media and after about a year I decided to start focusing more on music, since finding and sharing music has always been the thing I loved the most. So, I rebranded, changing the name and making it into a music-focused platform. It’s been five years and it’s something that brings me so much happiness every single day!

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Definitely not! I didn’t expect it to be smooth at all, but it’s been a bigger challenge than I expected for sure. I do feel so blessed to be able to do what I love and grow in this industry. Creating quality content and growing an audience is not an easy task, and the most difficult part was definitely all the rejection from major record labels and publicists, which was absolutely discouraging.

The most important thing was to not give up. I believe so much in what I do that giving up was never an option. But I did take many breaks in the process to regroup and restart with more energy. After working so hard and proving myself so many times, I’m currently at the point where the same record labels are reaching out to me, so the tide finally seems to be turning.

We’d love to hear more about your work.
Surfing Sound Waves is a platform for online music discovery. I cover music that personally inspires me, interview amazing artists and highlight new music daily on Instagram. The audience has been constantly growing, and I get a lot of feedback and playlist requests. It’s been an amazing journey, connecting with people from all over the world, including some really amazing artists. I love helping people find their next favorite artist.

I feel a real connection with the people who follow and read my posts, the people who are excited about the same things that I am, and the artists I discover and get to work with. I am very passionate about discovering up-and-coming, unsigned acts. Giving them exposure, seeing them blow up later, and following their success makes me so happy. It makes me so happy that I have a chance to turn my passion for sharing music into a source that helps bring music to the masses.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
Success definitely follows from living a life you love. As for my definition, I do love this quote by Maya Angelou that rings true to me: “Success is liking yourself, liking what you do, and liking how you do it.” I truly believe that if you do what you love, love yourself and listen to your heart and intuition, success will have no choice but to follow.
