Today we’d like to introduce you to Ireesh Lal and Nicolette Spear.
Body paint artist, Nicolettte Spear, met a musician, Ireesh Lal, while performing at a Gay Pride event in West Hollywood. She was painting a model and a 1957 Porsche that was converted electric to convey a performance art piece about clean energy. Meanwhile, Ireesh was providing music entertainment to a portion of the parade, playing the trumpet while DJ-ing electronic dance music for the crowd. The pair had an instant connection and people noticed their natural synergy that began taking place between both performers.
Immediately, Spear and Lal met to discuss collaborating together more often and they decided to create their own performing arts troupe. BioRhythm is the name of the collective and it now produces live body painting parties with musicians and acrobats on a regular basis. Audiences at the shows are encouraged to participate by also getting painted and becoming a piece of art alongside the performers. Currently, BioRhhythm hosts a body painting party one Friday each month at a restaurant called BareBurger in Santa Monica.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Producing events in Los Angeles can be a challenge because there is so much to do in this city, it can be hard sometimes to rise through all the clutter when it comes to marketing and promoting shows. Thankfully, we have a community of loyal friends and fans that really enjoy our body painting parties, and have been fortunate to grow as people share their positive experiences via word of mouth.
There are definitely a lot of expenses associated with a BioRhythm event (painters, models, musicians, acrobats) – finding an appropriate venue that supports the arts can be an obstacle. BareBurger is a great restaurant that allows BioRhythm to produce body painting parties once per month. As we plan to expand our events to other parts of greater Los Angeles, we hope to find supportive venues that are interested in collaborating with our troupe to produce fun, interactive body painting parties with live musicians and acrobats.
Please tell us about BioRhythm.
BioRhythm brings a holistic approach to creation through collaboration via a fusion of live music, performance art, acrobatics, and body painting.
The collective produces events featuring live body painting by Nicolette Spear. An eclectic mix of electronic/world/jazz music by Ireesh Lal provides the soundscape for each show. Painter, Norton Wisdom, completes the ensemble with his unique style depicting the performance art each evening on a continuously changing canvas.
Guests at BioRhythm shows are encouraged to also get body painted and become a piece of art alongside painted performers. The collective currently has a residency in Santa Monica at BareBurger, performing one Friday per month.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
Nicolette grew up on a horse farm in rural Maine with her family, including her mother and grandmother who were both oil painters. Creativity has been in her family for generations, especially painting! She went to Massachusetts College of Art and graduated with a BFA in fine art, but it wasn’t until she moved to Los Angeles that she took up body painting.
She quickly fell in love with the art form and can now say that she has been body painting professionally for almost 10 years, getting hired to paint for festivals, events, music videos, film, commercials, and throughout the Halloween season.
