Today we’d like to introduce you to Inese Ragland.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Inese. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Living in LA for close to six years and overall in close to 20 years in U.S, I’m originally from Latvia, a small country in Northern Europe, known for its serene dreamy beauty, gorgeous wild beaches, and forests. It’s the place of many artists and creatives. My family is no exception, my dad is a famous hairstylist who contributes a lot to cultural and creative scene, my mom is a fashion designer and a stylist (it’s dangerous to go shopping with her, you end up buying everything).
Since childhood, I was always exposed to beauty and fashion industry. At age 9 I already knew I am going to be a Makeup Artist and wanted live in Paris. But just short 6 years later I went on to make my dream a reality by deciding to go to a Hair and Makeup design school. I was learning how to do hair, makeup, and skincare.
The school was awesome, we had to come up with a lot of creative looks, I remember spending hours and sometimes days on ideas, we had great teachers who were all working in the industry and competing at hair and makeup competitions. There was always an inspiration to create better more sophisticated looks, to challenge yourself and to be the best you can be at your craft. I think this is the attitude that I adapted from school and it stayed with me for years to come. And of course, my dad would always say” Do it great or don’t do it at all”. After finishing school with honors, I went on to travel and work in Europe.
I was a part of a creative team working on fashion shows and hair shows, it was an interesting and very rewarding experience. I was proud to be a part of this cool group of people, who were all from different countries, we all spoke different languages but we were connected by the same language of creativity and pride of our profession. At that time, I also had the craziest haircuts and color combinations it was a lot of fun. After some time, I moved to the US and ended up in Michigan. Right away I started to work with photographers. I was lucky because one of my first clients was a daughter of a modeling agent, she loved her makeup and that was it. Literally, this one person brought me a lot of clients.
Michigan has quite big creative community and a lot of talented people. These were the most interesting people I have met. They were all from different walks of life and amazingly talented and unique in their own way. I loved my job, doing hair, makeup, and styling as well. My first published job was in one of my favorite magazines, the publication came out on my birthday and it was my first beauty story ever published, interestingly enough it was called “American Beauty”. We used girls of different ethnicities to showcase diverse beauty that the US has to offer.
I was published multiple times in local, national and international magazines and publications. Each and every time when I was working on a project I was in my element, to create, to stay up late and come up with ideas and looks that would be created, photographed and translated to pages of the magazine, which people would open and enjoy, it’s truly exhilarating feeling. I also happened to work with musician’s and that was also very rewarding. I got to hear some of the most beautiful voices, without any background music, just pure talent. It’s that positive energy of people who come to me to create their looks for an album, press kit, headshots that I get and give back that makes me feel lucky to be in this profession. So basically, I got the chance to work with models, actors, musicians, designers etc. and done that successfully for many years. Throughout the years I didn’t forget about skincare, I worked for several skincare companies, locally and internationally.
I’ve done seminars for salons on how to implement skincare in their business and got more training in skin care in Germany. I always wanted to have a small spa sort of sanctuary, where people can come in and relax and get great service, whether it’s makeup or facial treatments. Shortly after I moved to Los Angeles and started to work for a makeup studio in Beverly Hills. We were mostly doing events, as well as red carpet events, everything you can name, we did it.
Emmy’s, Grammy’s, BET’s, Oscars, Espy’s etc. I was there for a couple of years, during that time I decided to get more training in skincare and went to an Academy of Beauty in Culver City to get my California Esthetics License. Even though I was familiar with skin and skincare industry a lot, it was still a great experience to refresh and learn some new things.
After finishing school, I worked in different spas for a while, took some more training and attended a lot of seminars and then decided to open my own place. And that’s how Finesse Beauty LA was born. As I mentioned earlier, I always had an idea about small boutique/spa by appointment only, a special place where people could get high-quality individual experience.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
The road is never smooth and opening, doing your business requires a lot of focus. But I like a challenge. Struggles are very different, to build a clientele here is probably the hardest part.
L.A. has a lot of transient people, so it’s not like in other places where people live in the same neighborhood for years and come to you all the time. Also, you are on your own. When In Michigan, we had close-knit creative community and people would help each other. I would connect people and help build creative teams. It seems like it’s different here. It is extremely competitive; you are all alone and everything you do depends on you. This makes you toughen up a lot. I am still learning how to navigate this beauty world here. It’s unlike any other, but I am tough I will make it and will become skin care guru to the stars!

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
In a professional setting, I think success to me is being highly regarded as professional and expert in your field by your customers. I think if you have a great following, people that trust you, love you and think highly of you, it’s definitely a success.
