Meet Hon Hoang of EnFlight Design and Asia Photo Review in Koreatown

Today we’d like to introduce you to Hon Hoang.

Hon, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I am a Vietnamese-American photographer and filmmaker currently based in Los Angeles, California. Born in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam and growing up in Los Angeles, I began studying Photography shortly after graduating from UCLA where I studied Psychology. I see film and photography as a medium that answers questions satisfies curiosity, and showcases the things that are often left unseen.

I am currently working as a freelancer and on various photography projects such as EnFlight.Design and Asia Photo Review

EnFlight.Design is a web site devoted to the production, publication, and education in photography, design, and cinema.

Asia Photo Review is a community to showcase the best photography being produced from Asia and Asian photographers around the world. Our goals are to promote honest reflection of these countries and the stories the inhabitants have to tell.

In between films, projects, and photo shoots, I try to fill in those gaps with moments in street photography. Walking around Los Angeles trying to capture beautiful moments within what seems to be a gritty landscape.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I think when you do anything, you should keep in mind that it will not ever be linear. You have to adjust to life events and move towards what you want, even if that means taking a step back. In the beginning, there were a lot of mistakes. Simple things like how to handle shoots, networking, how to get paid, and relentless self-doubt. It was definitely disheartening to experience, but those types of tribulations are necessary for growth and learning. It helps a person know whether or not they want to pursue something.

EnFlight Design and Asia Photo Review – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I typically do business as EnFlight.Design (http://enflight.design/). It’s a website I built to house all of the creative work. Whether it’s my films, photo shoots, street photography, or photographer interviews, it all goes there. It showcases all of the projects I’ve worked on and are currently working on in terms of film and photography.

Another project I’m involved in is Asia Photo Review (www.asiaphotoreview.com). This stems from my time living abroad in South Korea. The website is meant to showcase either Asian Photographers or Asia/Asian based projects. This means that you don’t necessarily need to be Asian or of Asian descent in order to submit your work or be apart of Asia Photo Review, the projects being submitted just has to be related in one way or another. I particularly enjoy be apart of this because of how it shows a different side of Asia and Asians. Something that’s different from what you typically see from popular media. It also helps shine a light on photographers that need to have their work showcased to a wider audience.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Financial stability is the first indicator, being able to provide for those you care about and yourself. After that, it’s about having the time and freedom to pursue creative endeavors. Producing work that is cathartic for yourself and whoever is out there that might relate. If I am able produce work in a way that fulfills these two things, I would consider that success.
