Meet Hollywood Photographer: Jort Vanderveen

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jort Vanderveen.

Jort, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
At the end of 2013 my job which I worked on for 11 years came to an end and thus gave me an opportunity to travel for some months, with my first big camera. Some months became 28 months, and in this period I learned I won a US green card through diversity lottery. I decided to start anew in LA, California, and now, with my camera, making the most of it.

Has it been a smooth road?
My first job became the job I got stuck in for 11 years. 11 great years. And if the company would not have ended I gladly would have continued there, but then leaving it all behind and start travelling extensively made my world change. And now, for the first time, starting a living in another country, far from my own [I’m from Amsterdam, the Netherlands], is a big challenge. I arrived with my travel bag and now dealing with a slightly different culture and mentality.

What’s your outlook for the industry over the next 5-10 years?
It’s already been shifted a lot by the quality cameras on smart phones, and this will continue to evolve most likely. Quality will keep going up, more drones in the air, and maybe eventually robots doing all the photography for us..

Has there been a particular challenge that you’ve faced over the years?
I have only recently started looking beyond my personal interest of photography. The struggle for now mostly are the people. Setting up a shoot, and people then flaking out; you have to deal with your own expectations and maybe adjust them to the nature of the industry. At first I focused a lot on wildlife, capturing the unpredictable, and the rare. Moving to Los Angeles shifts me more towards people, giving great connections, but also human behavior in all its greatness and with its flaws.

What advice do you wish to give to those thinking about pursuing a path similar to yours?
Follow your own path, do what you think is right. Your eye is your canon.
