Today we’d like to introduce you to Jordan Southerland.
Jordan, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
There’s so much beauty here in Los Angeles. I feel truly blessed to wake up here every morning. I grew up in the south and, even as a kid, I was always dreaming big and wanting to put a smile on everyone’s face. I’d like to think I’ve brought a little southern charm to California with me.
I’m still developing as a photographer. I’m a vocalist by trade but I’m finding my camera is my new instrument. This city has an energy all her own and I’m inspired by something new each and every day. Just like every model I work with, I let their spirit create the art. It’s all new and classic at the same time.
Has it been a smooth road?
Every day is a struggle but what a sweet, sweet struggle it is.
When I moved to LA I was a signed artist. Let me tell you, that struggle could be made into a lifetime movie! One thing I do know, I didn’t go looking to be a photographer. Photography found me. That’s how I know I’m doing something right.
What has been the proudest moment of your career so far?
That’s a hard question but there’s actually two . My proudest moment would probably be , into thousand and 10 I came out to Los Angeles for a visit. After flying back home to North Carolina in just three days I quit my job got out of my apartment agreement sold my car got an airplane ticket and flew back to Los Angeles to pursue my career… This shows that I have determination and focus . Number two … A year and a half ago I was working a restaurant job waiting on tables and hosting…. I am now happy and financially stable doing photography full-time. Meeting new clients every day for different occasions
Were there moments when you had to struggle?
In the beginning, the struggle was getting my schedule aligned with my client’s schedule . But since I do photography completely full time now I’m able to travel and work around any of my client’s schedules at their convenience
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
I absolutely believe this is the best place for me to do my job career wise… In North Carolina, the market for head shots isn’t popular at all…. To new photographers in the city… The key to success is being persistent staying focused, being creative, and patients. He is also about getting the word out about your photography and letting everyone know … Someone once told me Patience is a virtue
