Today we’d like to introduce you to Asato Iida.
Asato, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I was born and raised in Tokyo Japan and I moved to Los Angeles in 2010 when I was 22.
The reason I came to LA was to study recording engineer and become an engineer. Unfortunately, I didn’t have a chance to work as the recording engineer. However, I could start working at a record label called Delicious Vinyl which is my favorite record label all time in my life since I started to listen to Hip-hop music. I was working as their store sales and all the event’s documentaries, and Japanese project assistant. While I was doing all the documentaries at the record label, people start introducing me as a photographer and I started to get photography gigs in US and Japan through word of mouth.
Now, I am currently working as a freelance photographer for Japanese culture magazines, brands in Japan and US, artists and etc…
Has it been a smooth road?
I live in the totally different situation from my country where is Japan. The cultures and behavior are completely different than where I am from. Especially languages make everything different.
It is really hard to express myself with the second language and that shows who you are, what kind of vibes people have so I guess just living in Los Angeles is a big challenge for me.
Has there been a particular challenge that you’ve faced over the years?
My biggest challenge is to have my style that has bit of documentary into fashion shoot that makes the model to not too posey.
