Meet Hollywood Photographer: Allen Zaki

Today we’d like to introduce you to Allen Zaki.

Allen, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
In 2003, I went on a trip to Australia with family, where I took my film camera and found inspiration shooting the Great Barrier Reef and Sydney Opera House. After graduating with a BA in Commercial Photography in Santa Barbara I moved to Los Angeles to pursue my dreams as a commercial photographer. I’ve been in LA now for nine years and shooting ever since I landed in La La Land. I’ve had the pleasure of working with a variety of clients, ranging from magazines, clothing companies and celebrity clientele. It’s all about establishing great relationships with clients and creating beautiful work.

Has it been a smooth road?
As with any field, there are bumps in the road. I started my business right as the economy went into its largest recession in 2008. But I stayed the course and have been fortunate to have the right people around me, and kept my business going through it all. I work completely freelance, so there are times when things slow down, but that’s when the creative side comes out and I’m able to work on marketing and personal projects.

So, what’s next? Any big plans?
Expanding my company, working with larger clients, building on my personal work and creating beautiful imagery.

Let’s go backward a bit – can you tell us about the most trying time in your career?
The hardest time in my career was about 1.5-2 years ago (2014) when I lost hope in my photography and the business. I stopped shooting and focused on photo productions. I felt like I was over trying to be a photographer and the game of trying to find work. But this past year, I found my passion again for photography and started to focus my efforts on rebuilding my book and brand and creating work that I truly love. It’s a daily struggle, but that is the life of an artist.

Are there days when you feel like you’ve done everything you wanted to, careerwise – the “I’ve made it” kind of moments?
My Wow moment came when I started working with editorial and advertising clients who really understood my work and appreciated it. Having clients come back to me and tell me over and over how much they loved the imagery we created, that’s when I realize I’m doing what I’m supposed to be doing!

Absolutely beautiful, and most importantly, artistic.
