Meet Hollywood Hairdresser: Teresa Cliff

Today we’d like to introduce you to Teresa Cliff.

Teresa, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I got a job offer in Beverly Hills right out of hair school. So, I packed up and moved to LA to work at Juan Juan. After that, I built a brand and a clientele for on screen hair color and makeup.

Has it been a smooth road?
Nothing good comes without a challenge. Moving out to California at the time I had to go back to school because you need more hours there. It took 3 times to pass state board because of undependable models. I was in a terrible neighborhood in a studio apartment I found online. I had to park 4 blocks away. Deal with bums sleeping under my car and being cornered by men constantly. The salon part was rough. I worked as a salon assistant and personal assistant to the owner so I was working 24/7. You definitely just have to put your time into that town to reap any benefits which take a good couple of years building those relationships and growing the thick skin you need to survive.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and career?
I don’t really believe in luck as much as I would say just verbally putting things into the universe. I go to Janine Jarman, the owner of Hairroin, a lot for creative advice. One of the things that has stuck with me was she had us do vision / goal boards. And whether it’s just seeing that goal daily so you stay focused on it or putting what you want into the universe, I gotta say it really works! Maybe not always on my timing but they have all happened! But also, I feel like nothing is just handed to you so no reward will come without a struggle first. So I don’t think that’s good or bad luck, just life!

Is there a quality or characteristic that has played an outsized role in your success?

I am originally from the South, Texas specifically, so I think that set me apart in a lot of ways. We are very humbled and loyal people and there’s a certain genuine kindness we have that ultimately helped with my success. Just putting my heart out there and building genuine relationships isn’t something that’s common in this industry.

What do you love about our city and what do you dislike?
Absolutely hate the traffic! Oh gosh. It’s worse than you even think it is! And I love the outdoors, so for me drives through the canyons are my happy place and hiking. Just getting away from the craziness of “la” because the rest of California itself is absolutely stunning.
