Meet Hollywood Fashion and Portrait Photographer: Michael Iloba

Today we’d like to introduce you to Michael Iloba.

Michael, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Like some things in life, my photography began as a hobby. It’s amazing when I look back to see how far I have come. Of course, I enjoyed taking pictures, something I know everyone can relate to when they get their first camera. As time went on, I developed a relentless passion for getting better, spending countless hours educating myself on the technical aspect and relentlessly kept shooting so you could say at the early years I was self-taught.

In 2015 I took the decisions after my college degree (B.Sc. Economics) from Bowen University in south-west Nigeria to pursue photography, but I felt I needed more knowledge of the arts and with the support of my parents I moved to Los Angeles after I got admitted to The New York Film Academy Los Angeles campus from where I graduated with a Masters in Fine Art (MFA) in photography. The experience of being formerly taught at industry level made a huge difference on how I perceived what photography is about, changed my whole perception and the vision I had. I am privileged to have gotten the opportunity, because when I look back, it would have definitely taken me a longer time to achieve the things I now know.

Prior to being a Fashion/Portrait photographer, I experimented with other genres but I found myself more drawn to fashion and being in school helped narrow down my decision.

Has it been a smooth road?
No, it hasn’t been smooth, I recall my first day at school when I had my previous works critiqued and it wasn’t a pleasant experience, I was defensive and I took it personally. Of course, that was the first time I had a different but professional opinion on my work. What I am trying to say is that my initial struggle was accepting and embracing this new perspective on what I thought I already knew. The struggle I am now grappling with is getting creatives interested in one, definitely not an easy task in an industry full of very talented photographers. I however never allow the “nays” discourage me from getting a potential “yes”

I appreciate everyone who believed in me, giving me the opportunity to prove myself. I am definitely looking ahead with the expectation of more opportunities to put out more creative works and add value to the industry.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
The proudest moment so far is this interview you’re having with me and my upcoming feature in the next `edition of Elléments Magazine, which would be published in September. It just goes to show hard and consistent work gets appreciated.

Every story has ups and downs. What were some of the downs others might not be aware of?
I am living in one of those moments now. It is finding clients who need your service and are willing to pay the cost for this service. Most people are eager to price you down and diminish your value. This is something I never yield to because I know my value giving the quality of my work. It can be very discouraging especially when other photographers are too willing to work for less.

Is there something we can do as a city to improve the outlook for professionals like you?
LA is definitely a good place career wise. It is a good place to start, I will definitely recommend LA for beginners. The industry in LA is at its peak and there are many opportunities one can explore starting out here. The fashion industry in LA, celebrities, movies, magazines etc. have created an atmosphere conducive for the growth of photography because they all need the services of photographers.
