Meet Henry J. Keith III

Today we’d like to introduce you to Henry J. Keith III.

Henry, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Originally from Richmond California located in the Bay Area, I moved to LA in 2015. Academics weren’t my strong suit, but the areas of art were my favorite.

I remember playing with blocks in elementary school and enjoying the process of making various designs. With little thought in mind, I was also fond of drawing and dabbled in graphic design as I got older. Moving to Hollywood seemed to spark those artistic interest that I had all along but never really developed.

The moment I decided to really give photography a shot was when some friends who were doing a shoot for their online magazine asked my wife to model. Seeing their process and ultimately being in the midst of other creatives gave me the push to give it a shot. From then on, I soaked up everything I could that had to do with photography.

Although I didn’t have a professional camera yet, my phone worked perfectly. In 2016, I brought my first DSLR and shortly after a friend gave me a 35mm film camera. With those two camera’s I shot everything. Furthermore, I continued to learn as much as I could and even went back to school in 2017 to pursue a degree in arts photography.

Currently, I am approaching my junior year in college, and I have been freelancing sense 2017. I have shot various lifestyle subjects, but I have become more fond of making portraits and shooting documentary photographs. Although I still have a digital camera, majority of my work is made with various formats in film photography.

For me, the process of shooting film is enjoyable and much more rewarding. My work can be seen via my website and my Instagram.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
The road hasn’t been smooth, but it’s been enjoyable. The struggle of wondering if my work is good enough is always present. In addition, everyone has a camera now so the internet is definitely saturated with images which can cause problems for new photographers.

We’d love to hear more about what you do.
I specialize in Film Photography. Portraiture always draws me. My aim is not just to take a photograph but make them. The difference lays in getting to know who is in front of the lens and making a photograph about them rather than of them. I also make photographic prints by hand in the darkroom and digitally. These prints are from my street documentary projects.

I’m proud to bring a tangible experience to this digital market whether through Portrait sessions or through people seeing my photographs online or in person. Ultimately what sets me apart from others is myself, when I make photographs, I’m shooting how I see and connect to things.

Also, my photographs tend to be very dense, and they all have meaning that is sometimes very obvious and other times requires digging.

Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
My wife deserves credit for her support in every area of this journey — also, the peeps at Typical Mag ( for the influence.

Also the brothers, Jeffrey Chery, Barry Daly, Josiah Myers, and Job Garcia, they all keep me sharp!
