Today we’d like to introduce you to Henar Abdelmonem.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Henar. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
ANAAR Home started in December 2019 when I was on the hunt for minimal and modern home decor that incorporated unique designs from around the world. I was also in the middle of redecorating my own home, but I didn’t want to spend a fortune on cute and stylish pillows, so I opted to find fabric that I can turn into pillow covers. I came across Mali Mudcloth and fell in love with the unique patterns and designs, and just the overall process of how they’re made. I started by getting a few sample pieces from a seamstress who was also a family friend. She did such an amazing job, and I immediately fell in love with the way they were styled together!
I then chose designs, fabric, and a color palette that I thought would go well together and had another batch of pillow covers made, rented a studio, and took some quick shots. A few weeks later, I launched ANAAR Home! We currently have pillow covers, throws and just added rug runners to the site. I’m continuing to expand ANAAR Home to really turn it into a one-stop-shop for modern home decor that incorporates designs and patterns from around the world and I’m so excited and thankful for this journey!
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
So far, I would say that everything’s been a great learning experience. One of the biggest challenges that I faced was when I first launched ANAAR Home. We launched at the start of this pandemic, and that was really hard since everything was so up in the air. I was also so intimidated by starting a small business since I don’t have a business background at all. However, everyone has been so extremely supportive and I’m so thankful for the community of home decor enthusiasts that I’ve built on social media and so thankful for all of the collaborations and amazing people I’ve been able to meet through this experience!
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the ANAAR Home story. Tell us more about the business.
ANAAR Home (@anaar.co) is my labor of love that really combines my passion for minimal and modern home decor. Our main fabric is Mali Mudcloth – a beautiful handmade fabric using mud in the heart of Mali. I love the unique designs and patterns on each pillow cover, and appreciate the process behind it. One of the things I love the most about Mali Mudcloth is the complexity found in the simplicity – each symbol carefully drawn by artisans has a meaning – a twirl pillow design represents life and a concentric circle represents the world.
One of my goals for ANAAR Home is to incorporate beautiful accent pieces from around the world into the home! I really believe that home decor is a great way to express yourself and really just add personality to your home. This is something that I always keep in mind when I’m developing my next collection.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I would definitely say that I’ve had some hiccups and bumps in the road here and there, the biggest one being launching in the middle of a pandemic. Because of all the closures, some of our inventory wasn’t able to get delivered in time, which really set us back when it came to launching certain collections. But, when starting out a small business, things aren’t always going to go your way – and this was a lesson that I really learned since I’ve launched ANAAR Home. Nonetheless, I’m so grateful for all of these lessons that have continued to allow me to grow as a small business owner and an overall person.
