Meet Hasmik Krpoyan of Sugar Fairy Desserts in Burbank

Today we’d like to introduce you to Hasmik Krpoyan.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Hasmik. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I started baking when I was 12. I was super inspired by anything Food Network had on, especially Food Network Challenges, (The ones with the huge AMAZING cakes) Since then I have not stopped baking. I would look for any opportunities to make decorated cake for my family. Some of the designs that I made were a guitar cake and two System of a Down cakes. When I turned 21, I started Sugar Fairy Desserts. My first order was a private order with Creative Visions Foundation. Then, I designed my Gingerbread cookie kits which jump started my business, I sold 30 that first year. In 2012, I left for the Culinary Institute of America in Napa Valley where I graduated with a degree in baking, and pastry arts. When I returned, I started to take orders again for Birthdays. In 2017, I started taking wedding orders. Wedding orders are my favorite! I am able to make a lasting relationship with my clients and be apart of their special moment, even after the wedding.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
No, running your own business is never easy. Some of the struggles I have had, have been working alone. Besides my mother, husband, and my niece Ani, who takes care of my Instagram I work in a home kitchen and I take care of most orders alone. That leaves me working quite literally around the clock, and can get overwhelming at times. I hope in the future we will have more help and a bigger space. But at the end of the day when I have a happy customer none of that matters, it brings a lot of joy to me that my clients are happy.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
Sugar Fairy Desserts specializes in making everything from scratch! Since I have a degree in Pastry Arts, I can take custom orders. For example, I can make most desserts and candies that my customers wish. I am very proud of the quality in my products, and the customer relationships that I keep. I am also known for the way I add fresh flowers to cakes. Customers really love those designs!

What were you like growing up?
I was always an artistic child. I loved anything that I had to use my hands to make. For example, I loved to paint, sculpt, crochet, and stitch. When I was about three, my mother would catch me mixing the flour and the sugar container together, so she should have known then that I would become a baker!
