Meet Hashani Azikiwe of Coco Luv in Woodland Hills

Today we’d like to introduce you to Hashani Azikiwe.

Hashani, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
My wife and I started this business a year ago because of my 12 years old brother who is autistic.

We currently have guardianship over him for the past three years. While in our care we wanted to change his diet to see if food and diet will improve his behaviors and overall difficulties.

We knew with changing diets, food, and habits for anyone would be a challenge let alone a child. So we had to come up with a variety of different recipes that are healthy and kid-friendly.

We spent endless days and nights researching and reading to find out what foods needed to be eliminated for children who are autistic. Sugar, processed foods, gluten, soy, and food dyes were what we decided was best to be eliminated from his diet and family as a whole.

My little brother (Alex) loves sweets as any kid would. So we started with recipe and development with all his favorite sweet treats and turned them into plant-based guilt-free and healthier sweet options.

Through trial and error it took us about a year and half to perfect our recipes. We donated and had family and friends try hundreds of sweet treats before we were ready to share it with the world. With a lot of LUV, support, and encouragement we launched Coco Luv in September 2018.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Some of the struggles we experienced would be turning recipes into a plant-based recipes but still have that traditional taste. We are committed to making sweet treats that do not taste plant-based and have minimal and high-quality ingredients.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Coco Luv story. Tell us more about the business.
We are an organic plant-based bakery. We started out in September 2018 as just a vegan cookie company but has now flourished into a full bakery.

We make sweet treats that have no processed ingredients, always organic, free of dairy, eggs, soy, gum, and refined sugar.

We are most proud of as a company that we do not make “junk” and highly processed plant-based sweet treats. There are products out there that are plant-based but are full of sugars and processed ingredients. They are very unhealthy but because it’s labeled and marketed as plant-based people assume it’s healthy.

We take pride in making the best, high quality, locally sourced, and minimal ingredients in our products.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
Well, I don’t believe in luck but I do believe in favor and blessings. I didn’t grow up with a silver spoon and I grew up in a rough neighborhood in LA but I made it out and had many successes in my life and businesses.

I’m not a religious person but I do believe in God and have been favored all my life. Everything I had and have now definitely blessings from the man above.
