Meet Hannah Fowler-Kimsey in San Pedro

Today we’d like to introduce you to Hannah Fowler-Kimsey.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
All my life, I have had a passion for self-expression, creativity and being in front of the camera. As a kid, I loved making silly videos with friends, trying on outfits to have our own fashion shows, and we even recreating our own version of “America’s Next Top Model” -one of my favorite shows both then and now. Once my growth spurt hit as a preteen (I stand at 5’11”), neighbors, relatives and even strangers would always tell me, I was destined to become a fashion model. Unfortunately for me, living in the Bay Area suburbs was not an ideal location to start a modeling career, so the summer after high school I decided to move to Los Angeles, make my parents proud by getting a Bachelor’s degree, and pursue my dreams of becoming a model.

I have now lived in the LA area for about five years. In this time, I was able to get a degree in English at Cal Poly Pomona and launch my modeling career. It has been a little over four months since graduation and being able to model full-time truly feels like a dream come true.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
As with most roads in life, the one I took to pursue my dreams of modeling was not an entirely smooth journey. Moving from a Northern California city with a small-town vibe to Los Angeles, without knowing a single soul, was intimidating at first. I always imagined I would be living in an apartment in Southern California once I turned 18, but when it finally happened, I was still somewhat conflicted about what I wanted to do in life.

Pursuing my education before diving head-first into the world of modeling was a smart decision, and I have to thank my parents for pushing me to do so. At times, it was difficult juggling both my schoolwork and passion simultaneously, all while trying to have an active social life and maintain mental stability. It was also hard to deny gigs for schoolwork, but I believed that my parents knew what was best for me, and am so grateful for their advice.

Now that I am 22 and college educated, I feel that I can navigate through the fashion industry with much more ease and grace than when I was still in school. I know that if anything happens to me, I have a degree in my favorite school subject to fall back on. And, even though I am not currently using my degree, I do feel that getting an education has made me wiser in many aspects of life- which is something I will never take for granted.

Hannah Fowler-Kimsey – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I would say that I particularly specialize in fashion and print modeling- including catalogs, editorials, advertisements, etc. I am most proud of always trying to better myself, improving my poses with each new job, and consistently reaching self-set goals on numbers and publications.

Something that sets me apart from others in the industry is my transparency. Integrity is important to me, as well as maintaining an honest work ethic, and letting people know exactly who I am as a person and what I am about.

It is all too easy to objectify models, and it sometimes feels as though I am a literal mannequin, but I try to change that narrative with who I am and how I work. I want more people to see models as individual creative artists. Whether it be posing for the cover of a dramatic novel or selling a pair of jeans, we as models are story-tellers and I absolutely love how every day that I go into work, a new story is to be told.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
The proudest moment of my career so far has been walking for Roberto Cavalli in the Spring of 2017. He is one of my all-time favorite designers and getting paid to rock his clothes on the runway felt like an incredible achievement. It may not have been my highest-paid gig or most publicized job, but I am a firm believer that doing what you love is what life is all about, and those are the moments that should make you the proudest.
