Meet Hannah Etherson of The Mindful Mats

Today we’d like to introduce you to Hannah Etherson.

Hannah, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I grew up in the small town of Carmel, Ca with three younger sisters. I had an opportunity to move down south to LA for college in 2001 and studied theatre arts at Loyola Marymount.

After school, I attended esthetician school, as my mom had just undergone a big skin cancer scare and I was fascinated with skincare prevention and wanted to help educate others on skincare and skin cancer. I continued in this career for ten years, and then my husband opened a fitness gym, and my attention went to help support our new found business while having my son in 2012.

In December 2017, my focus shifted onto a family collaboration with my mom and sisters. My mom at this point had already survived four cancer scares (colon, cervical, ovarian and skin). She is a very talented abstract artist with works like the famous Mark Rothko. Yet she embellishes her canvas with gorgeous quotes that speak to the mindful and wellness communities.

Words such as “I am Love” “I am enough” and “breathe.” Many of her works are hanging in cancer wellness centers all over California and Aspen. One day my sisters and I were chatting about yoga and needing a new yoga mat. There are so many different mats for different functions, but I have always been drawn to pretty things with quotes.

Makeup bags, tea towels, tank tops, memes on Social media, etc. and the thought crossed my mind to somehow print my mom’s art images onto yoga and meditation mats. My youngest sister going to school to be a yoga instructor, the other two sisters in fashion and myself in the fitness industry seemed like a fitting collaboration along with our talented mama.

So we found a printer in Anaheim who had eco-sustainable mats, and we started printing. They turned out gorgeous! We worked many trade shows, festival booths, holiday shows and even made it on People Magazine in their gift giving guide!

We partnered with The Mindful Life Project to give back ten percent of our proceeds to this amazing non-profit that brings yoga, meditation, expressive arts and music to at-risk schools in California. We are a small family business sending out big messages of self-love and self-worth one mat at a time.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Not smooth at all! Educating ourselves on the printing process of eco mats using high res images has been a process! Also wanting to only print in California and not designate our business to China creates a huge cost for us.

But we are The Mindful Mats, and everything we do has to have intention. We also have struggled a bit with our social media because there are so many different tactics.

Just educating ourselves alone on that has felt like a school all on its own. Everyday we are learning and growing. You can’t rush the process.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about The Mindful Mats – what should we know?
We are a sister mama collaboration. We sell yoga, meditation, versatility mats that are hand painted by our mom. Our mission is to raise the value of self-worth through our mindful mats. Our mats are so gorgeous they can be put in the home as a non-stick runner by a kitchen sink or bathroom.

Or by a pool or spa, on a lounge chair – there are so many options even if you don’t practice yoga. You can stretch on them or do core work on them or place them on the grass while you picnic. Our mats are one of a kind images created by our mom with mindful quotes written by her as a daily reminder.

Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
Honestly, just the sisters and my mom. Well, and the husbands- gotta thank the husbands for support and childcare, lol.
