Meet Hancock Park Makeup Artist: Crystal Castilla

Today we’d like to introduce you to Crystal Castilla .

Crystal , please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
My story is a lesson in doing what you love. After graduating high school I wanted to pursue a career in cosmetology, but some in my family told me “You won’t be able to make a living doing makeup” and insisted that I study something else. So at first I put off my dream of becoming a makeup artist. I went to college, got my degree and eventually found work in retail all the while doing freelance makeup work on the side. I started with weddings and special events and after a few years passed I didn’t feel that is was getting to where I wanted to be in life. I had always dreamed of doing makeup for the tv and film industry. So I saved up some money for school, did countless hours of research, and then finally enrolled at the All About Face academy for Makeup Artistry to become a Certified Makeup Artist. That was the best decision I ever made. I have since worked on multiple magazine shoots all over the U.S., film, TV, e-commerce websites, and even a Web series.

Has it been a smooth road?
It is sometimes hard to network and make solid connections since most working relationships are already established and most people will only work and hire who they already personally know. Being a makeup artist is a constant challenge to find more work and stay relevant.

Tell us about your childhood, what were you like growing up?
I was a pretty shy kid, well I am still shy at times. Was also a good student, loved dancing and animals.

What is your favorite childhood memory?
My favorite childhood memory would be going to visit my grandpa at his work. He was a veterinarian in East LA, my brother and I would play with the animals and occasionally be able to adopt a few and take them home.

So, what’s next? Any big plans?
One of my future plans includes acquiring an agent as they have access to the tv and film sets I aspire to be working on. Their pool of resources paired with my skills will allow us to collaborate on many great projects. I want to be working for the best and most well-known agencies in the industry. And of course, I look forward to more adventures with the love of my life and planning our lives together.
