Today we’d like to introduce you to Haleigh Scott.
Haleigh, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Having roots in New Orleans, it was almost mandatory that I learned how to cook. The culture is just as rich as the food and it inspires a lot of my popular dishes. Growing up, I lived with my parents, two siblings, and something always in the oven.
My parents were the ones that taught me how to cook. Whenever they were in the kitchen you’d hear, “you’re not watching me. How are you going to learn?” In my house, the kitchen was the heart of the home. If you were to flip through my family photo album or scroll through my iPhone most of our group photos are in the kitchen.
I had no idea I actually had talent when it came to cooking I just knew I liked to eat! My boyfriend was the one that actually pushed me to start selling plates back in 2014. I was shocked at the responses I was getting and the amount of people that started pulling up. One styrofoam box after another my new found passion of becoming a chef became a reality. Today I am the proud owner of Its Chef Hal LLC and my signature Egg Rolls are recognized everywhere! I find that being a “chef” is very common nowadays due to social media and let’s face it, people love food! But what sets me apart is that my most important ingredient is love, my mother taught me that. In the very near future you’ll catch my Egg Rolls on wheels!
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I would say some of my struggles came from lack of confidence. I’m really hard on myself and even with the high volume of orders, I still felt like I wasn’t enough to compete with all of the other chefs out there. Here I was in my parent’s kitchen trying to make it happen while others had trucks, restaurants, and huge followings.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Chef Hal – what should we know?
Chef Hal is all of presentation and an experience. Call me Shallow Hal because if it ain’t pretty, I ain’t serving it! I specialize in Egg Rolls, all kinds. Buffalo, Southwestern, Crawfish, Mac n Cheese and my newly added Beyond Meeeat. What sets me apart is I have my own sauce, Reine De La Sauce “Queen of the Sauce”. I put it on all of my meals and started shipping it all over the world earlier this year.
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
My family really pushed me to believe in myself and my products. My parents never held me back no matter how inconvenient it may have been to share the kitchen. Travis pushed me to take the leap and give the world a taste of what I had to offer. My big sister has always been my biggest cheerleader and continues to push me. Surprisingly outside of my family a lot of my support came from Instagram. There’s a couple of women that I had never met before but they saw my passion and have gone above and beyond in ways I could never imagine!
