Meet Afshin Hakim of Hakim Law Group in Brentwood

Today we’d like to introduce you to Afshin Hakim.

Afshin, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I went to law school with the intent of become a trial attorney. Having done well, I was recruited by a large international firm, where I started my practice as a litigator. After three years, I realized that litigation seemed to be an inefficient way to solve most problems and couldn’t justify the time I was spending on most cases. At that time, I made the decision to switch fields and become a corporate transactional attorney, an area that I had never really thought would be of interest before that time. Twenty years later, and having spent time at a few large international firms, as general counsel of a privately held company, and finally my own firm, I continue to look forward to representing and helping startups and existing business in business transactional matters.

Has it been a smooth road?
I would not be the attorney today had the road been smooth. I believe the struggles and obstacles have been the building blocks to becoming a seasoned transactional attorney. As an employment litigator, I have gained experienced both in the area of employment law and the litigation process. Having worked at big firms and survived a number of round of layoffs, I was able to better understand the business of practicing law and the art of understanding client’s business goals and objectives and delivering efficient, responsive and, ultimately, more effective results. As a general counsel of a private held company, I gained knowledge from an inside perspective, learned transactional real estate law, and as a result of the 2008 financial crisis, worked a number of years for bankruptcy trustees. These experiences have been instrumental in making me a better attorney in connection with the representation of my clients today.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Hakim Law Group story. Tell us more about the business.
My firm, Hakim Law Group, represents individuals, startups, and mature privately held companies in all business areas. This included from the inception, which would include formation and structuring of the company, to raising debt or equity financing, entering into various commercial contracts such as leases, employment agreements, licensing and distribution agreements, partnership and shareholder agreements, and joint venture agreements. I also have significant experience in mergers and acquisitions and have represented clients in buying and selling their companies.

I am most proud of my clients’ absolute trust in the legal services I provide. I feel that my experiences as a litigator, at large international firms representing from small to publicly traded companies, and as a general counsel, set me apart from many other transactional attorneys. These experiences have been priceless in being able to foresee issues for my clients that they would have never thought of and thus plan ahead.

How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
While there has been a movement through the internet age to automate legal services through services like legalzoom and similar platforms, I believe that more sophisticated clients will continue to demand and need personalized representation. With partner rates at big firms are trending to be $1,000/hr and more, I feel that more businesses will look to boutique practices that can offer quality legal service at a more cost-effective rate.
