Today we’d like to introduce you to Hailey Maxfield.
Hi Hailey, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Like most passions, my love of photography started in a dark room at my high school. We took photos, learned how to develop them, and then progressed into digital photography in the next year. Here I am, ten years later with the photography business of my dreams — and I’m just getting started! As the summer of 2021 ended, I realized I needed to reconnect with my love of photography. I’ve always held careers that allowed me to serve others, and the goal of my business was no different. After months of free photoshoots, reaching out to friends and strangers alike to setup styled shoots, I was suddenly being hired by local friends, new and old! And then WOAH – my first wedding! All within six months! Now here I am, nine months into my business, blessed to be my client’s favorite third wheel and capturing the love stories we’ve always dreamed of.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Nothing comes easy, right? Well, starting a business in a saturated market is no different. I am constantly in awe of the more established photographers that I’ve been so blessed to connect with. On that same note, it’s really hard to see someone in a season of their life that I desperately want. It’s really made me realize that I have to truly be myself – each of these businesswomen and men are so incredibly successful because they’ve found their niche, and I’m really coming into mine.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m a small town, traveling portrait photographer based out of Northern California, I specialize in wedding, elopement, family and lifestyle portraits. My ultimate goal is to capture love so true to my clients that the photos transcend every future generation in their family. I specialize in telling authentic, bold love stories that just might make you cry every time you see them. And this also leads into what I’m most proud of: serving others. I’ve always felt that God would push me where I need to be and I’m so proud of myself for *actually* listening to that this time (LOL). I’m also really proud of myself for staying me. I’m goofy, I’m quirky, I get jump-around-maybe-say-a-cuss-word excited after every single pic I take, and my clients get frustrated when I won’t let them see the REALLLLLLY great ones until I deliver their gallery — but you know what? I think that’s what sets me apart; I’m just serving and adoring the journey… and grateful to be part of so many.
Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
Oh gosh YES. 1. Get any camera. Seriously, any camera. 2. Get an editing program. 3. YouTube is your bff – I have spent hours and hourssss on YouTube and I still do this. I even consulted hours of YouTube before buying my camera because I wanted to make sure I had exactly what I needed and not what everyone told me I should have.
I would also tell someone starting out to be yourself 100% of the time. “Likes” and “Follows” don’t get you noticed; showing your face and who you are is what keeps your clients coming back.
