Meet Hailey J.

Today we’d like to introduce you to Hailey J.

Hailey, before we jump into specific questions about your work, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I grew up in a suburb of LA and spent my childhood taking voice lessons and doing musicals. I then went to college in San Francisco for classical singing. I realized that while I love opera, it wasn’t the route for me. Once I graduated and moved back to SoCal, I began pursuing pop songwriting and singing.

I met my main collaborator, the producer Jay Phoenix, about five years ago. This past spring, we released an electropop EP under the name JAY II (Jay the Second). In addition to a new JAY II single that will be dropping this fall, I have a song with the rapper Neaks coming out soon, as well.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It’s been full of twists and turns. At one point, I had surgery on my vocal folds, and I couldn’t sing for almost seven months. That was rough, but I took the time to learn more about songwriting and playing the keyboard.

I’m happy that my voice is back, and that I’m now doing a lot of writing and singing with other musicians.

Sorry to hear about the need for surgery, but glad you have recovered and moving forward. Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
I’m a singer and a songwriter. I specialize in writing pop music, and I’ve released an electropop EP. I’m proud of my education as a classical musician, and something that sets me apart from others is that I was trained as an opera singer. I also have a podcast called The Last Night of My Twenties, where I talk about the experiences of my twenties, especially the moments pertaining to music and relationships.

Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
I’m very grateful to my collaborator Jay Phoenix. We work under the name JAY II as a songwriting duo. We’re great friends, and we also both come from a classical music background, which makes working together fun. In March, we released an electropop EP, which was produced by Jay and sung by me. Jay also records my podcast – his professionalism and talent elevate every project I work on with him.

I’m thankful also to my friends in the group Producers Social. PS is an event where musicians come to network and get feedback on their songs. I’ve met a lot of awesome, talented people through it.

Thank you, as well, to my friends and family for always being lovely and supportive. In addition, thank you to the many wonderful photographers, makeup artists, and hairstylists I’ve worked with over the years on photo shoots.
