Today we’d like to introduce you to Guy Cusson.
Guy, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I moved to Southern California for school in July of 2005, 15 days after graduating high school in Billings, MT with $500 in graduation money to my name knowing absolutely nobody. Within three days I was serving tables in Long Beach making friends with my coworkers. I originally came out for video game art and design but after touring the studios and getting to know the industry I found myself looking for a pivot into something more social and a little less 80-hours-a-week-in-the-dark type of work culture so I decided to transfer schools and ended up getting my Associates Degree from OCC in Costa Mesa. Through a couple years of trial and error and a dabble in the entertainment industry learning production from the best I became incredibly focused on building out my own company. The good touch was born. I used my background and broad learning to create a service based business out of my house where we still operate today. Last year I went exclusive with an up and coming tech-travel hoodie company and spent my time hanging production lines in downtown Los Angeles. Once the exclusivity ended I took my developed team management, inventory tracking, and commerce knowledge and applied it to the good touch. As it stands, my company now services upwards of 15 long standing clients, with two employees with their specialties ranging from digital content production, to copy writing. Within five years we will have a loft space with triple the talent, and clientele as long as we continue to expertly scale up as the workload demands. I love waking up every day with an inbox full of challenges and I feel fulfilled after a day of providing solutions, and optimizing!
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
The way I look at it, my road has been smooth. I have worked diligently and strategized tirelessly to set the good touch up to where it is now, and we operate smoothly. With a digital service based business, our overhead is next to nothing so we get to re-invest into the business aggressively.
In order to get to where I am now, I had to put 23hrs in between my family and myself, travel to the unknown, and scrape through with my own undeveloped instincts. Along the way I have gotten caught up in fake businesses, had my laptop stolen with my life’s work in it, felt lost, made mistakes, and forced myself into 15 hour work days, but I have to imagine that my path has been less challenging than a lot of people so it would feel right to say I wasn’t incredibly lucky to end up in a position working for myself, and waking up every day knowing that my actions directly influence my future.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the The Good Touch story. Tell us more about the business.
The Good Touch is an incredibly little machine. What sets us apart from others, is that myself and my talented team all three come from different backgrounds and have a large combined network of resources to pull from at the drop of a text. Our digital content creator is from South Africa, and comes from the world of documentaries. Our copy writer is a creative screenwriter who comes from the corporate world, and I am a digital media specialist. This sets us up to operate with the resources of a large scale (and bloated) company, with a fraction of the overhead so we have the opportunity to remain competitive in this incredible industry. We are 100% online and can take our business worldwide which we have done. We have clients anywhere from Australia, Germany, New York, Montana, and here of course.
What we do is provide digital solutions which primarily manifest as websites. We audit a company’s technology strategy, and provide optimized solutions that set people up for a streamlined relationship with technology in a world where tech is king. The website, SEO, Social media presence is the front end solution, but our specialty is making sure everything is tightly integrated, and works well across a team of any size.
As a company, we are most proud of our ability to retrofit outdated strategies, and increase a company’s output as a result. We love showing people solutions they never considered, or even thought was possible. We are known for making shit happen regardless of what it takes to do so. None of us have the luxury of rich families or investors so our competitive edge is our undying passion for getting the job done and delivering an incredible product for cheaper than the big guys.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
Though cheesy, I do believe that luck is where preparation meets opportunity so in that regard luck has played a little bit of a role. Opportunities are all around us here in Los Angeles and we are always prepared to take advantage of them. Beyond that we pretty much work day in and day out to make the dream work.
