Meet Guillermo Cuevas of Dunrite Leatherworks in Little Tokyo

Today we’d like to introduce you to Guillermo Cuevas.

Guillermo, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
As a teenager, I had an interest in all things old. I would browse old photos of people from the 40s and 50s and obsess over the style of the period, with a special attraction to the boots and belts the people would wear. I always wanted a western tooled belt, just like the old cowboys I’d see, but could never afford it. So, one day I decided to but myself a beginner’s leather kit. It took a lot of time and effort and practice to get my work to where it is today. Although leatherwork is a learning game, picking up new tricks as I go.

Has it been a smooth road?
My biggest critic is myself. The big obstacle I had to overcome was finding the courage to quit my job at the time and jump in the deep end to start my business. It was a constant battle with myself about whether of not I could make a living making these things I love. What would set me aside? But, I took a look around at some of my friends who are makers and business people and I’ve come to realize that if you love doing what you do, there will be someone who will appreciate it.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
I took the plunge in late 2019. I moved my workshop into Space City Vintage in Little Tokyo, who is a new manifestation of one of the coolest Vintage clothing shops from Hollywood in the 90s, with the help of Owner Mr. Zac Vargas. Dunrite Leatherworks has gotten traction because of my belts. I make various styles ranging from 1950s style dress belts, to western tooled belts, and the hot item at the moment vintage style studded belts.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
I feel like our city is a great space to start a small business. It can be scary with big names towering over you, but get yourself out there. Los Angeles is one of the most unique places on planet earth. There are many subcultures around the world built around the ideas of Los Angeles. So, with the right exposure and a quality product, I believe you can go the distance. Put yourself out there because no one else is going to do it for you!
