Meet Grisha Nazarian of Grisha’s Custom Shoes in Burbank

Today we’d like to introduce you to Grisha Nazarian.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Grisha. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I’m Armenian, but I was born and raised in Iran. At the age of 7 my dad told me I needed to work and bring in money. So he took me to a cobbler shop near our home and asked if they needed any help around the shop. The shop owner took me in. After that, instead of going to school like all other kids my age I began working every day. I was the youngest apprentice in the shop.

By the time I was 15, I could completely craft a pair of shoes start to finish. I became a master cobbler by the age of 19. I married at 21 and moved to my homeland of Armenia. There I began working for a large shoe manufacturer. Within a short period of time I was promoted to lead shoe pattern designer and prototype developer. I trained and taught new shoemakers how to develop custom molds/lasts, design patterns, build soles, assemble top and bottom, etc.

In 1979, I moved my family to the US. I worked for different custom shoes development shops throughout the 80’s and in the 90’s, I setup my own custom shoe shop. During that time, I made shoes for a lot of Motion Picture movies, celebrities, Vegas Shows, orthopedic clients, etc.

Today I continue making shoes for clients from all corners of the world. The work is very laborious, takes a considerable amount of time, but my clients get what they ask for.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
No, not so smooth. Moving from one country to the next, starting from scratch every time, new language, etc.

In the US, it took many years for me to showcase my talent and skills at crafting true “bespoke” shoes.

After 10 years my work started grabbing the attention of prominent shoe designers and other famous faces.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Grisha’s Custom Shoes – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
My business is called Grisha’s Custom Shoes. I make custom Bespoke Shoes the old fashion way, using old world European methods and tools. My specialty is just that. I can take a sketch/concept and bring it to life for any set of feet. This is what I have been doing for over half a century. From flashy designer shoes to custom orthopedic footwear, I can make ALL types of shoes. I am known for making shoes for big name celebrities, people with extremely abnormal/oversized feet. I am most proud of the opportunity to make shoe for the late Michael Jackson, Elizabeth Taylor, and many many other celebrities who have passed on. I suppose the thing that sets me apart from others is that I have not met or heard of anyone that can do what I do. At least not in this country 🙂

So, what’s next? Any big plans?
YES. Retirement. I am old now and tired all the time. I don’t work long hours anymore and unfortunately, I have to turn down clients because I don’t have the energy any more.
