Meet Greg Wallace of Instant Jungle International

Today we’d like to introduce you to Greg Wallace.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
After years of saving money, I acquired Instant Jungle in July 1980. At that point, it was primarily a wholesale plant nursery, specializing in interior installation and plant maintenance. I quickly realized the transformational potential that plants provide. I was inspired and became completely involved. Now Instant Jungle is close to celebrating 40 years in business.

Has it been a smooth road?
As with any company you have highs and lows and the learning experience has been priceless.

During the early years, we enjoyed growth and prosperity and with the subsequent recessions and economic downturns, I realized the need to diversify and grow. Our exterior design, installation and plant palette started to expand and we began to specialize in exterior plantings. Our diversity is what has helped expand the company throughout the years.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Instant Jungle International story. Tell us more about the business.
Our company is known for, and has specialized in, interior and exterior plant material and interior plant maintenance. The team is knowledgeable in the proper planting and proper plant type for each client’s specific needs. In expanding over the years, we have incorporated exterior specimen palms, bamboo and large trees, along with a talented design and installation team that ensures viability. Our silk plant division allows us to custom design faux plants and trees for the locations where live plants won’t thrive.

In addition to permanent installations, we also have a plant rental department that is capable of creating the most elaborate or simple environments for all events and occasions. In the last couple of years, we have added green walls to the list of our specialties. Our living wall art has expanded and is now leading the industry in design and product. Our goal has always been quality-driven, with customer service at the top of the list.

How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
I see an increase in living wall art in the future, both in residential and office spaces. With space being an issue, it makes sense to use the blank walls to create an alluring atmosphere. Plants bring empty space to life, improve air quality, reduce noise levels, and help people feel connected to nature. There is also an upsurge in plant rentals for party and event spaces that require a finishing touch. Our rental coordinator is a master at creating the perfect setting for every occasion. We have seen an incredible increase in the use of faux plants as well. Silk plants no longer look like “grandma’s geraniums.” The faux plants we use are made with quality materials and look as authentic as their live cohorts. They are quite beautiful and in many cases undetectable.
