Meet Greg Moe and Jenni Johnson of RoughFit Outdoor Fitness in Tustin

Today we’d like to introduce you to Greg Moe and Jenni Johnson.

Jenni and Greg, please share your story with us.
We met about 9 years ago as training partners. Jenni was training to qualify for the Olympic Trials in the marathon and Greg was training as a competitive triathlete.

We were introduced to each other by the original and previous owner of RoughFit, and in 2010 we bought the business from her. We both have a love for the outdoors, and are passionate about health and fitness, helping people and encouraging a spirit of adventure in life.

We have a boot camp class that meets at various times throughout the day as well as yoga classes, and a running club that we coach. We take clients out rock climbing, paddling, hiking, trail running, backpacking and just encourage them to find their own passion in life.

We have also continued to pursue further education in our profession. Jenni has completed her Masters in Exercise Science, and Greg is currently a student of physical therapy, En route to becoming a Doctor of Physical Therapy.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
There are always struggles along the way. The training business can be volatile, and following the changing desires of the fitness industry, as well as an over-saturated business market can make it tough. But we have chosen to stick to the science. We do what the research tells us to do, and change if we learn something new.

However, we have been so blessed with a committed and loyal client base. We have the most amazing, caring, clients, who have truly become a part of our family. They have seen us grow up, and we have seen them make huge changes!

It’s not an adventure unless things go wrong along the way, so I guess we are on the right track.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about RoughFit Outdoor Fitness – what should we know?
We specialize in group training with an emphasis in injury prevention and corrective exercise. We thrive in optimizing human movement and getting people to correct their movement patterns so they can enjoy life to the fullest.

What sets us apart is our depth of knowledge, our scenic outdoor setting and the fact that we live what we teach.

Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
The previous owner of RoughFit, Lindsey Fernandez deserves a lot of credit as mentor. She trained us to be trainers, and taught us everything she knew. Without her, we would not own the company, and we wouldn’t be in this position to impact people on this level.

We are each other’s supporters and advocates. We would not be able to run this business without having the other to lean on, bounce ideas off of, and to stay inspired.

All of our training staff is a huge blessing to us. They all genuinely care for the clients, and we feel completely at ease putting the clients in their care. The integrity and character of this team is superb, and that has allowed us to expand our class times and offerings.

The clients are also a huge cheerleading squad. They encourage us in our athletic endeavors, encourage each other in class and push each other to try new things. Their energy keeps us motivated to work hard for them.
