Today we’d like to introduce you to Greg Bryson.
Greg, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I was managing the bar at the Wallace in Culver City. I was buying ice from a company that had just raised the price on me substantially without notice. When I called him to negotiate, he said “the price is the price.” This guy had a monopoly on the craft bar community… and he is a total asshole! We had to stop him! My business partner and I flew around the country to learn the ice game. With a lot of careful consideration, we were able to directly compete and I believe I swallowed up most of his business hand selling to my friends in the bar community and making lots of new ones along the way. We are also able to offer something different. We researched robotics and are able to offer laser engraved ice cubes to our clients which has really given us a lot of attention thanks to Liquor.com and Voyage LA. The bar community is Los Angeles has elevated their drink programs everywhere. Thanks to them, we are able to follow them and offer ice one bar at a time.
Has it been a smooth road?
We actually started in the garage. We had three freezers and a cooler to deliver in our cars. It was ROUGH. Starting the business was challenging but we had the will. Eventually, we were able to move into our facility and buy the equipment to become a real company.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
We sell large format, crystal clear ice for individual drinks at bars/restaurants or events. The ice is made using directional freezing, which removes air and other particles. The ice is 3x as dense as regular ice which means it melts much slower than conventional ice you make in your freezer. This is ideal for enjoying spirits and mixed drinks without unwanted dilution. Basically, it’s really big and hard. People like it. We also engrave logos on and INSIDE the ice cubes which is really unique and has clients wondering how it happened at all. Really magical experience with logos in ice cubes.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
Customer Service. Our roots are in hospitality and we have extended that ethos in all of our service efforts. This has created long lasting relationships since the conception of the company. I also goof off. A lot. We don’t take ourselves too seriously.
