Meet Yvette Duran of The Greatest Story Is Your Own in Irvine/Oceanside

Today we’d like to introduce you to Yvette Duran.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Yvette. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I am a commercial underwriter in my day job and I hate it. I write credit presentations for business owners who are requesting financing. Within that in depth write-up (lots of boring financial analysis) there is a section detailing the business history and the owner’s background/experience. It is a mini-bio. I ask the questions over the phone and I listen.

This is a minor section in comparison to the overall document, but it is the section I do my best writing in. It is because I love hearing the business owner talk about their business and the struggles they have endured and still endure daily. I remind them, “At least you are building your own empire and not helping someone else build theirs.” I hear their smile. When I ask the questions “Who is your direct competition, what makes you better and why would I choose you over them?” This is when the passion starts flowing. Here is where I am today. I still hate my job, but I found a little gem in all that muck. I found my passion and I started my own business. I am building my own empire. I am interviewing individuals and helping them to tell their story for whatever reason they choose, Just not specifically because they need capital. I love listening, hearing their struggles, triumphs, dreams, motivations and then…….handing the story back to them to have memorialized. I love this job.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?

1) While I knew this business could fulfill me emotionally, wasn’t sure it could sustain me financially.
2) I am building this business In tandem with working my day job, which is very demanding.
3) Doubt.
4) Scared.

The Greatest Story Is Your Own – what should we know? What do you do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
My business and what I do is to listen to a life story, write it for my person and then hand it back to them in whatever format they wish. What I am most proud of is my intention for starting this business. The sole reason for doing this – is not the money (with a disclaimer that I totally understand this needs to financially sustain me) but it is because I am good at it and I love it. I also know my customer will love the product. What sets me apart from my competitors is my approach to the interview and what the mission is. In every interview, I want my person to be comfortable and in surroundings that accommodates that. It will be fun. It will be a time to talk about themselves. Who doesn’t like talking about themselves? Back to my niche, I am truly interested. I will come prepared with questions, but really, I just want to listen and let them go. I have been writing mini-bios for financial institutions for years, which are sections in write ups that are presented to a committee, approving business capital financing. That is the goal and this has resulted in millions of dollars being provided to local business owners. My company mission is to showcase my talents to my person, having them read the story they told and to either see a smile, or a tear, or both. #winning

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
One of my banking clients who I interviewed for financing told me “You know what? I have never told that story before. I wish my kids would have heard that”. It was a proud moment for me because after hearing her own story, I believe it made her feel so proud of herself. What it also did for me was spark the idea of my business. She was my first interview for The Greatest Story Is Your Own. Her name is Glenda and she changed my life.
