Today we’d like to introduce you to Grace Joo.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Grace. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
It all started when I was in high school. I use to dye my friend’s hair in my bathroom using drugstore box color all the time. I never considered doing hair for a living. Friends always made a joke saying I should just open my own salon since I’m always styling and doing their hair. So then I googled beauty schools around me, and that’s how my journey started.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It definitely has not been a smooth road. I was an assistant for about five years, and it was probably the hardest years of my life. I use to work 10-12 hour shifts a day 6-7 days a week. As tough as my mentors were, I learned all aspects of becoming the best that I can be as a hairstylist.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
I absolutely love doing blondes! I normally work with clients who have very dark hair, and I’m able to transform their look. It’s very difficult to make brunettes into blondes. Through trial and error, I realized you have to be patient and take your time. That was what set me apart from most colorists. My clients appreciate that I don’t take multiple people at once. I take my time and focus on making sure that everyone who sits on my chair leaves happy.
What were you like growing up?
Growing up, I always loved being around people. As a social butterfly, interacting with clients of all different personalities came natural to me.
