Today we’d like to introduce you to Grace Getzen.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Grace. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
My journey into life coaching has been one of continual transformation. It began with the diagnosis of a brain tumor at the age of 15. Facing possible paralysis or death, my worldviews and life perspective were tested early on. I left the hospital cured and with a heightened sense of self-awareness, an ability to live in the present moment, and a deepened gratitude for life. That one event started me down the path of clarity and expanded possibilities that I have tread throughout my entire life.
The most notable change was that I started to live more and worry less. It was both scary and exhilarating to be the arbiter of my fate. For example, I once crashed an audition for a leading dance academy and was not only awarded a place but was also given a scholarship. I got up the moxie to move to New York City – with no job and $600 in my pocket – and ended up thriving in the Big Apple for over 7-years. I eventually moved to California and wound up managing a team of therapists in a renowned day spa and launching what became a career in health and wellness.
Today, I continue to discover, refine and align my beliefs around boundaries, personal responsibility and internal growth and integrate them into a thriving coaching practice. I use my ability to live in the present moment to connect & help others answer this one potent question, “What else is possible?” I love supporting people as they sort through and make the best choices possible and find more freedom, joy and happiness in the process. I am an expert at helping clients to explore and communicate their personal boundaries and needs in a way that is assertive without being aggressive. To me, there is no greater joy than to guide others through conflict to problem resolution – both in the workplace and at home – and helping them gain more direction, confidence and fulfillment.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Life is full of adversity, obstacles and challenges. How we meet them defines who we become as we evolve over the course of our lives. Most of my challenges came early on in life with being raised, as so many are, in a dysfunctional family as well as intense bullying at school. The brain tumor I had surgery on at the age of 15 set me on a very different path than that of my siblings and many of my peers. To come out of something so serious granted me the opportunity to see that much of what we spend our time worrying about truly doesn’t merit the time or energy we expend upon it. My choice to move to New York City at a young age to dance, my choice to take up archery in California and compete, along with so many similar choices throughout my life have given me the courage, discipline and enthusiasm to take on challenges – even while at times feeling, as I jokingly call it, “fearlessly terrified”. Combine this with my natural propensity towards optimism I have been able to walk a path that has led me into the healing arts where I can use my extensive life experiences to support my clients as they venture on their journeys discovering that same opportunity to create a world of infinite possibilities for themselves.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Grace Getzen Coaching story. Tell us more about the business.
I’ve been in the healing arts for almost 20 years. I began with training as a Reiki Master/Teacher in 1998 and then progressed to massage therapy where I collected over 1000 hours in a variety of modalities from deep tissue/structural bodywork to Shiatsu and many others. I began teaching massage which led to a position as a trainer and ultimately a massage manager for a team of over 60 therapists. While working with my team I continued to receive training – most notably in A.C.T. (Accountable Communication Technology) – which is leadership development and personal accountability. I built heavily upon this training with a variety of coaching techniques and skill sets that allowed me to work closely with my team one on one.
As a coach, I specialize in helping my clients discover, refine and align their beliefs around personal boundaries and needs while also giving them tools to aid them in conflict resolution. They apply what we work on in all their relationships, personal and professional, to bring a balance back into their life. I believe my ability to stay 100% present while working with my clients gives them an opportunity to see what their world can look like without worry or fear. I have also created workshops for groups that focus on how to take personal responsibility for our feelings and actions. All my many years in the healing arts as a teacher, facilitator and bodyworker bring a deep empathy to my work that is unique and of great comfort to my clients as I ask them to take a deep look into the mirror. I am able to hold a safe space for my clients as they begin to unravel who they truly desire to become and discover what is on the other side of fear.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I’m not so sure about luck as I am about synergy. Synergy is the interaction of elements that when combined produce a total effect that is greater than the sum of the individual elements. I see many elements come together in certain ways that can combine to create something amazing. Many things happen in our life that seem to be pure luck, serendipity or happenstance. That may indeed be so. I tend to lean toward the Laws of the Universe where the Law of Attraction, rather than luck, brings certain circumstances or occurrences into play in our lives. In other words, we can create what we want – good or bad. This mindset complements my training on personal responsibility and allows my clients a stronger sense of control over the course of their lives. Life is all about choice and my coaching helps clients see that what they want is always within reach and is created by the choices they make.
