Meet Grace Cheng of Mylk Labs in City of Industry

Today we’d like to introduce you to Grace Cheng.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Grace. So, let’s start at the beginning, and we can move on from there.
As the founder and CEO of Mylk Labs, I started my health journey in 2016 when I began modeling after I graduated high school. I decided to adopt a healthier, balanced way of living and it was through this journey that I discovered the powerful effect foods can have on our bodies. From trying fad diets to “health” foods that never delivered what was promised, I eventually learned the truth behind good health—whole foods with real ingredients.

While trying to balance modeling and getting my business degree from USC, my days began at 4:30 am and consisted of many red-eye flights in between 10-hr school days. At home, my routine would be a warm bowl of homemade oatmeal, so naturally, I wanted the same when I was traveling. Unfortunately, I couldn’t find any convenient, grab & go oatmeal that fit my needs– all the options were either too high in refined sugars or so bland I couldn’t stomach the entire serving.

With that in mind, I set out to recreate my homemade oatmeal– one that had the perfect balance of unrefined sweetener and healthy fats to fuel my needs and on-the-go lifestyle. I wanted to share my daily dose of warmth and happiness with the rest of the world, and with much excitement, Mylk Labs was born.

With the savings I’ve built up from modeling, I have self-funded this entire company and continue to grow it as I work full time as CEO of Mylk Labs and model internationally. One of my goals working in both industries is to bring the fashion and health food industry closer together. I would love to use Mylk Labs as a bridge to educate real health and provide wholesome food to overworked and undernourished models in the industry.

Ten months have passed since I started the company and I have mainly been focusing my efforts on creating brand awareness and increasing accessibility of the products. With that said, I, alone, have grown our retail list to almost 300 stores across the US and Canada.

I’m excited to continue growing the company and hope to soon roll out with new flavors and product extensions!

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
There have been MANY bumps in the road, especially during production time. One of the hardest things was launching the company. For example, I had a problem with the cardboard boxes and had to stop mid-production because they weren’t cut the right way. 11,000 boxes and $3,000 down the hole before I even launched!

Other things that normal businesses also go through is making sure you get paid and people trying to scam you– yes, there are a lot of those! I’m lucky enough to have met a lot of great people in the industry who has helped along the way.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Mylk Labs – what should we know?
Mylk Labs is a Los Angeles based health food company that makes healthy grab & go oatmeal cups. Our oatmeal is sweetened with only 5g of organic coconut sugar and uses a roasted ground almond & oat base that imitates an almond mylk texture with just the use of hot water. We custom roast & slice our nuts for a creamy and crunchy texture and only use 6 wholesome ingredients or less in all our products!

At Mylk Labs, we only use clean ingredients that you’d find in Mother Nature’s garden—all natural, non-GMO, whole grain, vegan and free from gluten, refined sugars, and artificial additives. Our ultimate goal is to provide rewarding, wholesome food through real ingredients that can be enjoyed by everyone. Even though we don’t have the flashy certifications, it’s technically woman-owned and minority-owned as well!

Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
My little sister, Melody, has been a huge help! We butted heads growing up, but she’s become my best friend as we grew older. She’s has helped me with the accounting side of my business, and while Melody isn’t necessarily my ’employee,’ she does some balancing of the books here and there in exchange for a lifetime of free oatmeal!
