Meet GP Mauro of The Creature Den

Today we’d like to introduce you to GP Mauro.

GP, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
While living in Berlin, I would often go visit the zoo to see one of my favorite animals, the Rhino. My walk there took me past the Bauhaus Museum, and I became intrigued by the idea of the relationship between form and function.

After moving back to the US, a need for a creative outlet caused me to buy a bunch of art supplies, including a big chunk of clay. I quickly realized I was able to sculpt better than paint, and I sculpted a Rhino head based on my favorite animal from the Berlin Zoo.

I’ve always loved the idea of making functional day-to-day items from artistic pieces, so I made a mold and cast 4 of the heads to make into a coat rack for my nephew. I began getting orders and special requests for specific animals, and The Creature Den was born.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The biggest struggle was (and still is) figuring out who our buyer is and the proper way to market the Creatures. Are we a home good? Are we an art piece? Finding a way to help people understand the process and that these are all hand cast and unique has been a hurdle.

Often, people just see a ‘plastic toy head mounted on a piece of wood.’ They don’t realize that these are all hand-poured casts of my original sculptures, and each piece of wood is reclaimed from around the US and has its own unique story.

The Creature Den – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
The Creature Den is a collection of original animal head sculptures by GP Mauro. The Creatures have functional uses, such as bookends, or can be hung on the wall as a key hook or jewelry display. Each piece is fully handcrafted and one-of-a-kind.

Creatures are available as single heads for small hooks, holders, etc., as well as incorporated into larger art pieces and installations. We specialize in creating unique and functional items for the home and professional space.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
Last year, I was contacted by an award-winning Visual Effects Producer for major films about ordering a few dozen Creatures. A blockbuster superhero movie was just wrapping post-production, and the producer was looking for unique Thank You gifts for the visual effects team, who worked mostly on animal-related animation and effects.

Knowing that incredibly talented artists and designers have something I made hanging in their houses as a gift for working on a major motion picture is a pretty amazing feeling.
