Meet Goli Kalkhoran of Lessons from a Quitter in Orange County

Today we’d like to introduce you to Goli Kalkhoran.

Goli, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I was a lawyer for a number of years. I was the quintessential Type-A, risk-averse, people-pleaser that followed a predictable path to law school. But after practicing for over seven years, I found myself burned out and miserable. After having my first child, I decided I wanted something else. But it took me almost a year to admit that I wanted to quit the one thing I’d worked for my whole life. I finally decided to walk away from law and start exploring other interests. Over a year, I found parts of me that I never knew existed.

I became really interested in entrepreneurship and the tech scene in Orange County. I eventually turned an idea I had for a portable photobooth for my son’s 1st birthday into a business. I started Usie Booth, a modern, digital approach to photobooths. We rent, lease, and sell booths both locally and nationwide.

In the midst of that process, I started seeing how many people were miserable in their careers. I knew what that feeling of “stuckness” felt like but I really wanted people to see that you can start over. I decided to launch a podcast called, Lessons from a Quitter, in order to highlight other people’s amazing stories of quitting traditional careers and forging their own path.

We’re coming up on the 1-year Anniversary of the podcast and it has been one of the biggest joys of my life.

Has it been a smooth road?
No, of course not. I don’t think it is ever a smooth road because there is no way to learn and progress without making a million mistakes. There have definitely been struggles with manufacturing our booths or having the time to create the podcast and technical issues, etc.

But I’d say the biggest struggles are all mindset and mental. We all have Imposter Syndrome and it comes up whenever you’re starting something new. So pushing past the thoughts of “who am I to do this?” “why would anyone listen to me?” “This will never work” was the hardest part.

Please tell us about Lessons from a Quitter.
Lessons from a Quitter is a weekly podcast and community focused on the belief that it is never too late to start over. We highlight the incredible stories of quitters who have left what society considers “successful” to find fulfillment and a life that they love.

We also, periodically, provide group programs and courses to help people who want to quit but don’t know how to start. We walk them through building out a plan to figure out the finances and next steps of their journeys.

I’m most proud of the impact that we’re having. I get emails and dms every week from listeners around the world who find inspiration from the podcast and are building up the courage to go after the life they want.

How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
Podcasting is exploding and, yet, the majority of people still don’t listen to podcasts. I see that changing over the next 5-10 years. There are bigger networks and institutions entering the podcast game so there will be more money and advertisers as well. I think it will just get bigger from here.
