Meet Gloria Ramirez of Beauty Works Hair Studio in Burbank

Today we’d like to introduce you to Gloria Ramirez.

Gloria, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I am an immigrant from the south of Mexico, the fifth of eight children from a single mom. I was 25 years old when I traveled alone to Tijuana, with the false promises of someone’s help, I soon realized I was on my own. I found my way into the states and on June of 1990 I arrived at the greyhound station in down town Los Angeles, with 11 dollars to my name, the pain of having to leave my 7 yr. old son behind, and with a dream for a better life for my son, myself and my younger siblings.

Not until 3 years later I was able to attend cosmetology school, with the struggles and barriers of being undocumented, but I managed to finish school by working as a housekeeper and caregiver. Sept. of 1997, I managed to acquire my business, with almost no experience, but with determination I started a new journey!!! Working long hours 24-7, and with 2 brothers a sister and my teenage son under my wing I had only one choice. “Make it work, or Make it work”.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
One of my biggest business-related struggles has been to do it all ALONE, as a single woman and mother, and without the help that we all seek from our elders or spouses, I still managed to help the rest of my family in the process. Taking risks and making all the decisions myself along the way.

My first obstacle was the way I acquired my business, because at the time I was naïve and ignorant, I was the victim of a scam by the person who sold me the business.

Another obstacle is the fact that this is a male dominated business world, making it a challenge, when it comes to dealing with landlords, city related negotiations, being open to the public and exposed to anyone who walks through my door. I became not only a hairstylist, but manager, handyman, security etc. (I own more tools then I ever thought I would), I have learned a lot along the way!

Please tell us about Beauty Works Hair Studio.
I own Beauty Works Hair Studio in Burbank, I have been the sole owner for the past 20 years at the same location. I am also a Master Stylist and specialize in dry cutting, long layers and highlighting.

I believe, that what sets my business apart is the very personal service we provide to our long time, and new clients, from a cup of freshly brewed coffee or a glass of good wine, and amazing energy, to great services provided by our experienced team, as well as the unique eclectic décor that everywhere you turn you can see a piece of art. (most pieces have been refurbished or fabricated in house). Best of all we offer conservative prices that are affordable to the hardworking women that would not think twice to get certain services, to the professional women who have a plethora of choices, and that is why many of our clients consider my shop a “Hidden Jem”.

I am most proud, that 20 years later I am able to consider myself a successful woman, not necessarily because I survived in business all these years, in a male dominated city being a Latin woman, and because I get to make a living off of something I enjoy doing (Hair color, etc.), but because I have the freedom of making my Hair Studio more than just a “Beauty Shop”. I have had the opportunity to meet and partner with wonderful, inspiring, and strong women. As well as opening my doors to those young entrepreneurs that want to be inspired by attending our workshops and being able to make a small contribution to my community by generating employment to a couple people for most of the 20 years.

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
I took the long rout in some aspects, and in many ways it could have made a difference and saved me time, but at the same time I learned a lot along the way, “I may have taken the long way, but not the wrong way”, but due to these mistakes I am where I am today, so I can’t say I would have wanted to do anything different.
