Meet Giselle Serrano of Product G

Today we’d like to introduce you to Giselle Serrano.

Giselle, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
My mother studied in Mexico where she pursued her seamstress career. She’s designed my dresses as a young child and has made custom clothing for family and friends. I’ve always loved watching her create the designs from scratch. I’ve also lived through changes in fashion and the way it continues to grow, even bringing back old gems like 90’s tops and mom jeans. About three years ago I started learning how to make my own clothing, and along the way I was inspired to pursue this hobby of making and designing my own clothes that I could share with others. My mother has been my teacher throughout this journey and helping me continue it along the way. I now own Product G, which is a small Instagram business where everything is handmade from my home.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
The biggest challenge at first was learning how to be patient with the process of making even the simplest shirt. There’s a lot of detail and precision that helps put a piece together for it to work well. As a small business, it’s important to be consistent and being a college student and working a full-time job has challenged my time management for it. I don’t believe that things have been easy or will be because I continue to learn different details of making pieces and I know I will have to continue to be persistent.

We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
Product G specializes in mostly women’s clothes at the moment but I do wish to create pieces for men as well. I am mostly known for making handmade pieces and customizing them for my clients. I also let my clients help design what they have imagined when they request a custom order. I am currently focused on summer clothing because of the season but I’m always inspired to work on other projects. My designs are subtle but they stand out and become more of a statement piece. I am most proud of how far I’ve come and seeing the improvements from when I first started. Seeing people enjoy my designs makes it all worth the time and work put into them and really adds to how proud I feel about them.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I would say for sure my mother is the reason why I am so lucky to be able to even have this business and hobby of mine. Her talent is inspiring and I am lucky enough that she is my teacher. Not everyone can say that their mother is their teacher in a different aspect than being a parent. Even if in the long run this business is still a hobby, I believe in my designs because of the talent that my mother has shared with me. She is the reason that my talent has bloomed and I believe to be her prodigy.
