Meet Gina Cuellar of Jez and Stela

Today we’d like to introduce you to Gina Cuellar.

Gina, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I went through PTSD and concurred the struggles of depression, detachment, anxiety, numbness, fear, anger, guilt and shame, after being raped at age 17 and having a daughter. My life was turned upside down, leaving me feeling absent and not being able to understand all the reasons for “what did I do wrong, to deserve this?” Not knowing how to move forward and struggling with the symptoms of PTSD, I finally reached out and surrendered myself to the Lord.

That day, that choice gave me a new life and understanding that the Lord is not a religion but a more deep understanding of a relationship we should have with him. Through my new journey with the Lord, I learned how to become an overcomer. I found freedom in forgiveness, obtaining my heart desires in all of my blessings that I was receiving and how a small step of obedience can make a big difference. The past does not determine your future nor does it become your identity. I was able to study business and printmaking, a passion I grew up learning, but it wasn’t until I set out to do volunteer work where I found a different passion.

I became so intrigued helping others (young teens and young adults) that I noticed that they lacked the knowledge of overcoming their obstacles. That they to can be overcomers. I became so involved in these organizations from different communities and decided it was time to share my story and be an example to them. This leads me to put all of my passions together and that’s how Jez and Stela Clothing started. Everything is done in-house, from running the business to shipping the product ourself. The designs have meaning that surrounds the lessons I learned from my struggles. Our mission is simple.

Is to empower you to embrace the importance of being a STRONG, CONFIDENT and PERSISTENT individual in today’s generation and future generations. By incorporating positive, inspiring and faith-building messages on all of our products, we want you to always be happy, to be you and reach for more and be more! You have the power and self-will to make a change and live a positive lifestyle that reflects to the world that change starts within oneself and one message at a time. Choose to be more, choose to speak life, choose to walk in love and impact the world one message at a time.

Through it all, I can say, “I am an entrepreneur, mother and volunteer worker. I help run our family business of 30 years at L.A. Designs in Vernon, CA where Jez and Stela is located. I have a side dog training business called Blessed Pawz and I am an active volunteer advisor on Set a Fire, an outreach organization for the young adults.” It doesn’t matter where you come from or your past, the Lord can do much with a little, all it takes is a willing heart to want more and become more!

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Not a smooth road at all, but worth all the learning lessons I encountered. Dealing with the symptoms of PTSD is hard. Feeling absent and not being able to trust and run to someone is lonely. Even today I get hit with obstacles.

When you have a calling in your life and doing the work of sharing your story and sharing the gospel, the more tribulations we go through, but through those tribulations, we see the fruit, riches of it all. That’s the best part! Jez and Stela has a lot of growing to do.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
Here at Jez and Stela, a mother and daughter team are faithfully lead to work hard to come up with the best concepts of our learning lessons to embellish on our products; we want them to be fun, inspirational, motivational, colorful, and creative. All of our products are designed and printed in Los Angeles by mother and daughter in our family based screen-print shop, L.A. Designs Inc. Here we specialize in screen printing and promotional products, as well as embroidery.

Jez and Stela is known for sharing the gospel in an alternative way where it’s not too preachy but more fun, fashionable, inspirational and motivational. This is truly what sets us apart from others in the same industry. We target the young, yet the older crowd is so intrigued that they too love us and our mission. We value their support and love they show us every day. Overall, I’m proud of the work we do, but the best part of it all is being able to share the story and history of our company and how it became to be. We find joy in it every day.

What were you like growing up?
Growing up was okay, I started working very young in our family business. So I was very focused. Nonetheless, I was an A+ student, never got in trouble, loved working and learning. I was very much in love with dogs and wanted to become a veterinarian, this love for them led me to go to ABC college and get certified as a dog trainer (I had to be realistic, I couldn’t be a veterinarian as I’m not fond of blood and needles).

I loved playing sports, not so much watching them though. My passion for writing came through poetry, it was my escape to share my feelings. I was a calm child, kept to myself, no problems and friendly with people.
