Today we’d like to introduce you to Gia Unera.
Gia, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
As a little girl I loved making doll clothes and drawing my teacher in different outfits while in school. My childhood hobby turned out to be my passion in life, having worked with fashion designers in the industry made it more stronger for me to pursue my dream of having my own line someday. I went to a fashion school in Los Angeles and started to create my own line of ladies wear where I promoted ethically made women’s wear in a traditional dressmaking way, from sketches, making patterns to the final creation for each individual taste and style. I also help other same minded women owned businesses to create their own brands from fashion Illustration to small production run of their designs, so we can help each other and grow a community of ethically made in Los Angeles products that can boost the economy in our own small way.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
In the fashion industry, being a startup business is not that easy, we are competing with bigger name brands that has an established market and customers already, so we have to come up with ideas and designs that can cater to a market of slow fashion or custom made styles, veering away from the mass producible practice.
As you can see everyone got fast fashion, everyone has the same dress, but with our company we are promoting slow fashion movement, where we had our dresses made before in a traditional way.
So marketing the idea is quite challenging for the new generation of people to take it in, but the custom made market is started to make its way again by the help of the community of artisans and handmade markets/pop-up shops throughout Los Angeles that promotes made in Los Angeles products.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
GUD Apparel is a one stop fashion studio that creates one of kind ladies wear, specializes in custom made dresses, gowns and other items, according to their specific style and needs.
We also help other women owned business in starting their line, by creating prototypes, patterns, samples to the final production pieces. We don’t require high minimums so small businesses can save cost than going to a bigger manufacturing companies that requires a higher minimums for each design and production needs.
What were you like growing up?
I grew up in our home country in the Philippines and being in a third world country, there are so much challenges I have to face each day. As a small child I grew up with determination to succeed in whatever goal I have in life by discipline, perseverance and prayers in everything that I do, this is where I got my strength to go on and be the person that I’m right now.
