Meet Gerald Ferrante of D’Vine Lounge Bar in Downtown LA

Today we’d like to introduce you to Gerald Ferrante.  We asked his team for a short intro and then asked Gerald some questions about his story.

What can you tell us about Gerald to set the stage for the interview?

Gerald is a wine aficionado by excellence, a French real estate businessman from the south of France retired into the restaurants and bar business, Gerald took over D’vine on June 2016 after leaving France for good with his daughters and wife Sylvie.

Gerald is surprised by the American Culture, there is so much paradox but so much potential!

This country is full of great opportunities and the Americans appreciate good wine and good food, especially in LA, they have so much to choose from, this is a mix of cultures!

As a true wine aficionado, Gerald has been working for months to adjust the wine list the way he thinks every wine list should be!

D’vine was a wine cellar, now a wine bar, with a cocktail list too, Gerald wants to focus on wine!

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It’s been a difficult road, nothing is easy in the restaurant and bars world! It is not necessarily easy to leave your country and your family to do business in such a big country like the United States but this country has so much to offer. It’s been very challenging course, but it is so interesting to meet people with such a diversity and background.

The challenge is to find wines that are tasty, earthy and elegant keeping the price reasonable.
The French wine market is very different and so are tastes.

American wines are bigger, stronger. French wine is worldwide famous but it doesn’t mean necessarily better for everyone

Tastes are made of different culture and history, it is like traveling… The palate is very different

D’Vine Lounge Bar – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
D’vine was a wine cellar belonging to the O hotel, we made it a lounge bar, with a great atmosphere, we even have live music once a week, usually on Friday but sometimes Saturday!

D’vine is the place you want to hang out at any age, it is classy, you can have a conversation enjoying a good glass of wine and a great selection of tartines, salads and trays are available, for vegetarian, cheese or cold cut lovers…

With Chef Markus Bold, newly hired at D’vine, we intend of elaborating the menu, we want to propose a special each week like a hot dish specialty!

Markus has French Island roots so his grandma told him a lot of secrets from her original country. Talking about Markus, we are particularly proud of having him as he comes from far, starting his career as a chef after spending years in precarity, his story is a great example for us. The proof, you can be anybody you want if you decide to be and fight for it.
We are also proud we developed a special menu for DineLA, Chef Markus took a particular care of his choice.

We have plenty of project for 2017 and are so excited to have more people coming at D’vine and discover our secret underground classy wine bar and small kitchen restaurant.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
When I changed my original career and went into something difficult because of the challenge, the move to us made me feel good about doing it!

My best childhood memories and the one that gave me the passion of wine. When I was a little kid visiting my grandfather in Italy while he had his vineyard.

Touching and smelling the grapes, the earth… I was hooked!
I think, that’s it!
